TWD crash on connecting

Picked up a copy of TWD for my wife on Steam as I loved the game but she just can't play the damn thing. We have identical computers as far as hardware goes and it ran just fine for me.

Here are the things we've pulled from the forums and tried so far:

1) Played with compatibility sittings, tried them all but no luck
2) Set run as administrator, no luck, set to all users, no luck
3) Tried replacing a DLL here and there as suggested, no luck
4) We don't have controllers but we pulled all USB stuff one by one, no luck
5) Disable internet connection - this appeared to work

Is there a fix to this? I'd like her to be able to play as the game intended and have the Steam sync work properly for her without having to always disabling her internet connection.

We're both on Windows 7 64bit and we connect tot he web through a home router. Seems odd that it would crash on connecting but that is where we seem to have an issue every time.

Please check if the game works during a clean boot, and post the dxdiag info of the affected PC.

Booting clean in Windows Vista / 7:
    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    4. Select the Services tab
    5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
    6. Click Disable all
    7. If running the game on Steam, re-check the "Steam Client Service"
    8. Click on OK
    9. Click Restart.
    10. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your settings by doing the following:

    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    3. Click Ok
    4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.
Windows 8: At the start screen, type in "dxdiag" and hit enter

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Open the file and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents, and paste them in a reply by pressing CTRL-V.
Sometimes the Forums spam filter catches long posts like this. Don't worry, we can still see them and make them visible.

Sorry for the delay...ran the clean boot and still no luck. Crashed on the same spot (after I clicked to continue and crashed on connecting).

The DirectInput crash is suspicious. Does it always happen when running dxdiag?

I don't have any logical explanation right now, but something obscure you can try is unplugging the second display.

Yeah the DirectInput crashes on both our systems for some reason. It's been like that since we got the computers. Yeah, this is a curious one.

EDIT: FYI: It doesn't seem to help, so no need to try it.

One thing you can try is blocking the server it connects to when you "click to continue" in the windows firewall.
This is entirely experimental, and might have side effects, but maybe it lets you run the game while being online. If you try it, please check if the steam achievements get registered. In theory, it's like the game being only partially offline.

Press the Windows Key, type cmd, and confirm by pressing CTRL-SHIFT-Enter. This should open a Command line with Administrator privileges.

Now add a rule to the windows firewall that blocks the server api.telltalegames.com the game connects to at that point:

netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="TWD Block API" dir="out" action="block" remoteip="184.172.42.85,184.172.42.83"

Now try if you can start the game.

    Afterwards, delete the rule using:

netsh advfirewall firewall delete rule name="TWD Block API"

If it works, the rule can be further refined to only block it for WalkingDead101.exe, but for simplicity it's not included, because i don't know the path to the file on your system.

I didn't see anything suspicious in the dxdiag.

You can try blocking every internet connection for TWD by using a rule similar to this one. It is essential that you replace the path to the WalkingDead101.exe with the correct one on your system.

    netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="TWD Block" dir="out" action="block" program="C:\Steam\SteamApps\common\the walking dead\WalkingDead101.exe"

Afterwards it can later be removed with:
netsh advfirewall firewall delete rule name="TWD Block"

Nope unfortunately i have the same issue. It types "Connecting" for longer, and still crashes. Can i maybe modify the host file to loop the server api.telltalegames.com to 127.0.0.1? I wonder if that will change anything?
  • edited January 2013
Nope changing the host file did not change anything. Any other suggestions?

The game connects to api.telltalegames.com and meta.telltalegames.com, so you can try both in the hosts file.
  • edited January 2013
No luck with that either. I assume that the game have some issue with the "Local Area connection" interface all together. Because as soon as it changes to "Cable Network is Unplugged" the game skips the "Connecting" bit all together. I guess no achievements or anything of that sort but at least the game runs. However my issue is not only achievements :(

    Any other suggestions?

    Edit:

I have no problem with the game not connecting anywhere and not showing me any statistics. But please let me stay online for the background programs (Aka - Skype and downloads)

    Edit #2 :

Just tried to unplug my cable from my PC and use a WiFi USB lan card. Same issue, as long as i have connection to the internet the game crashes. As soon as i disconnect myself - It all works just fine

That's interesting indeed. I never had the opportunity to troubleshoot a system with that problem, so i thought the problem was related to the game being able to connect in some way.

We should look at some network information. Maybe that helps.
Please open a command line and run:
    ipconfig /all |clip
Then start a reply here, and paste the content of the clipboard into it.

It copies the output of the program to the clipboard :) Nice feature.
Copying data from the windows terminal manually is very tedious compared to other operating systems.

Is it so, that the game doesn't work no matter if you are connected wired or wireless, even if the other interface is disabled?

Going to disable now and check.

    P.S.

My complaint is more about the way selecting works. I prefer it selecting each line i mark, as e.g. in the Ubuntu Terminal or pretty much every text editor, instead of an arbitrarily sized box.

Okay posting a reply as it took me quite long but!

It doesn't matter which adapters are active when i try to run the game it still does the same error.

I sometimes use Linux as a nice and comfortable work environment for software development.
Windows is nice for gaming, but only because game companies rarely support Linux.
In most other Aspects i prefer Linux.

Sadly the error report doesn't have any information i can work with.

I have one last idea, that might bring valuable information.
That's logging what the game does until it crashes with Process Monitor.

You just start it and set a filter to
Process Name | begins with | WalkingDead
and click "Add". Then Confirm with "Ok".

Then start TWD until it crashes.

Process Monitor should now show a lot of stuff the game has done.

Now in the menu go to "File/Save" and select a save location.

Now upload the file, to a filehoster like this one and paste the link.

I am very sorry but my PC knowledge is not that great in this branch. I am good with networking.

Could you please specify on how to start a process monitor? Or which software to use? All i know is Wireshark but it didn't help me much because apparently the crash happening even before it connects to game server as i see no requests to either of the IP's you mentioned earlier from my network adapter. I see a lot of other random IP addresses but not the ones you stated above.

    Sorry i messed up.
I had the link to Process Monitor in there, but somehow lost it while editing the instructions.
    It's now there to download.

P.S. I love Wireshark :) Good information that it crashes before trying to connect to the servers.

    Done and done.

This is the file i got:
    File

I understand nothing in this log file XD so yeah.

Also a bit shout out and thanks to you man! Being a volunteer and to know so much as well as willing to help! You are just too awesome! Thanks a ton

    Thanks for the appreciation.

The download link doesn't work. It doesn't look like the normal ge.tt download links too, so you might have copied the wrong link. After fixing the link, it says "This file is not available, because the upload was interrupted."

Please check if you can download the file yourself.

If not, please try uploading it again.
There's a "copy link" button at the top after the download, to get the correct link.
  • edited January 2013
    Whoops, sorry my bad -.-

I didn't let it upload completely. Hehe, it looked weird to me as well. Now i do see the process bar on the left. Just usually they give a "Download" button only AFTER the file is uploaded XD

Anyhow here is the right link

Yeah, I'm gonna need some time analyzing that :-D

The game did crash right before you stopped logging, right?

Have you already tried disabling the Steam Overlay for TWD?
Right click on TWD, click on "Properties" and uncheck "Enable Steam Community In-Game" in the "General" tab.

I made sure the process was terminated and no more enteries went to that window. And i believe that steam has nothing to do with it. I checked anyway and it still crashes. I think it has something to do with the fact there is an internet connection, though i am not experienced enough to know why.

I am still trying to figure out something with the process monitor.

Can you see anything unusual in the Steam log files?

It might also be useful if you did another process monitor log, running the game error free, with the network disabled.
That way i could compare them, instead of trying to compare it with a log from my system.
  • edited January 2013
Unfortunately i have no idea even where to read them, or how to.

Too bad you are at it all alone =( and it begins to be really late for me now, have work tomorrow morning.

Is there anything i can do? Where i can find the log at least? (I am very new to steam, as i never used it before few month ago)

I just had an unusual thought, because it doesn't make much sense, but i've seen strange things before.

Please update your Realtek HDA driver
and unplug all non essential USB devices. That means also means that Rapoo Wireless Audio device with the old drivers.

This is my only headset. I have no other sound sources. Gonna try it regardless, but it still doesn't explain how the game runs with the same hardware and drivers while without internet.

    Gonna do so now.

Don't worry, I'll be here tomorrow. Have a good night.

    For tomorrow:
Did you see my edit about the second process monitor run?

Also there are some *.log files in the Steam folder, and some files in Steam\logs.
I have no experience with them, but I would take a look at them.

That's what i meant by it doesn't make sense.
But i know that the game has issues with old Realtek HDA drivers, at least if the sound device is used.
Knowing no fix, it's worth trying to optimize everything.

P.S. I order you to go to bed :-P

Unplugging and disabling the device did not change anything.
I didn't notice any edit about process monitor. I just have confirmed i have saved the log only after Walking Dead process was terminated.

About logs, here are My logs

However they are only the ones from the "log" folder, i had no other log files anywhere.

I found something weird in the process monitor.

c:\ProgramData\VKSaver\vksaver3.dll from the company audiovkontakte.ru is a dll that's loaded into the WalkingDead101.exe that shouldn't be there.

    I'll check the logs now.

Closed VKSaver and still no luck.

Added the log of the game with no net (Where it skipped through the connecting part all together and i just clicked on "Exit game")

    Link re-post - Right here

I am gonna sleep now (Almost 3 AM and gotta wake up at 5 XD )

Talk to you from my work place tomorrow, or after i get back from work so we can test more.

    Alright, sleep well.

I found nothing useful in the steam logs.
There are a lot of failed connections in the connection_log.txt, but not at the time the game crashed and also from much earlier dates. I don't know what that's about, but i don't have such issues in my steam log.

I compared your process monitor logs. It's hard to draw conclusions from that, but i could find the time when the game crashed.
It might be random, but one of the last things the game does before it crashes is including C:\Windows\SysWOW64\FWPUCLNT.DLL (FWP/IPSec Usermode API).
It doesn't do that in your unconnected log. Since IPSec is network related, i found that even more suspicious.

I took a look at the files details, and then i noticed that it's older than the one on my Win7 system. Yours is version 6.1.7600.16385, while mine is 6.1.7601.17514. I tried to find out why, and then looking at your dxdiag again i found this:
    perilomo wrote: »
    Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_rtm.090713-1255)

It's easy to miss, but your Windows 7 is not up to date. The latest is 7601.win7sp1_gdr.120830-0333.

All that might not be the reason for the crash, but it's definitely something to look at. Please try installing the latest windows updates and SP1.

Will get home today after work and will try that out.

Thanks for the assistance, hopefully it'll resolve my issue

    Edit:

Forgot it's a fresh install of Windows and i haven't installed windows updates yet -.-

    Edit 2:

Could you by any chance point me to the corresponding update name? As i don't wanna update useless crap like Internet Explorer etc on my PC. If not, then at least the row number in the DxDiag file where i can find the version of my system so i can just check later after installing the update.

    Thanks in advance

I don't know which updates you need, i would do them all to be sure.

It's right there in the beginning:

I also had another idea. It might be worth a try to update your network device drivers.
Before that, please go to the device manager and post the driver version and date of your Realtek Adapters (Wired and Wireless) for reference. You find them by right clicking each Adapter, and selecting "properties", and then opening the "driver" tab.

The drivers are indeed horribly old. Let's hope that's it.

I already looked them up yesterday :)

Download and install the Auto Installation for Win7.
