The Walking Dead - Episode 1 Crashes

Hello! I am really excited to play The Walking Dead for the first time. However, when I start the game, the menu loads up just fine, I select episode one, the loading screen appears for a few moments, and then the game crashes with the message, "TheWalkingDead101.exe has stopped working." I have tried redownloading the game, validating the game cache on steam, redownloading my video card drives, and running as administrator as well as trying out different compatibility modes. The weirdest part is that episodes 2-5 run just fine, and I don't want to start those because I have not yet played Episode 1. All of the episodes are installed as I bought the game through Steam. This is tough guys, I really want to play this game!! :\ Thanks for helping!

    That's really weird.

    Some things you can try:
    - Disconnecting from the internet before starting the game
    - Deleting the savegame folder:
    Win Vista/7: %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead
    XP: %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead

If that doesn't work, please post your dxdiag info.

    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.
Windows 8: At the start screen, type in "dxdiag" and hit enter

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Open the file and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents, and paste them in a reply by pressing CTRL-V.
Sometimes the Forums spam filter catches long posts like this. Don't worry, we can still see them and make them visible.

So the level loaded, but now it crashes after 5 minutes of gameplay.

Which of the earlier suggestions helped?

Please try setting all in-game graphics settings to lowest/off.

Actually neither solution works after trying again. Changing the graphics quality does not solve the problem either. Episode 1 will not start at all unless the Internet is off, and it only gets to the title before crashing if I delete the save data at /documents/tell tale games/The Walking Dead.

The most recent time I tried this, I actually got a blue screen error from Windows. I was not able to read all of it, but it said that the "Video Memory Manager" was not functioning correctly or something of that nature. I'm sad that I haven't been able to play yet :(

Notebooks are sometimes difficult with games.
Some of it could be an incompatibility with your integrated graphics chip.

The blue screen is very suspicious though, and could mean faulty drivers or hardware.

You can try if running it during a clean boot helps.

You can also try if you can find a BIOS update for your specific notebook model on the HP site.

Do you also have crashes with other 3D Games?

Booting clean in Windows Vista / 7:
    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    4. Select the Services tab
    5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
    6. Click Disable all
    7. If running the game on Steam, re-check the "Steam Client Service"
    8. Click on OK
    9. Click Restart.
    10. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your settings by doing the following:

    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    3. Click Ok
    4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

I actually have had problems with other 3D games giving me blue screen errors and the like, and I did try the clean boot but it did not fix the problem. I think you are right that the problem lies in the notebook and not the games...
