KQ NEWS: Heard it from a guy who heard it from a friend...

edited April 2013 in Kings Quest Game
Stop the presses! We have confirmation. Sort of...

Okay, so maybe this doesn't quite make the cut to be included in the "KQ Timeline" thread, but since we are all desperate for any information about Telltale's KQ, here it is:

From "Monolith" on Adventuregamers.com forum:
I can confirm the KQ status hasn’t changed since its announcement and this is just by straight up asking a friend who works there. Its not a leak, nor is it an announcement. It just isn’t canceled.

Direct link to this "confirmation": http://www.adventuregamers.com/forums/viewreply/26204/

Btw, when I wrote the subject to this post I couldn't help but think of these lyrics: http://youtu.be/UgincTSCkYQ

Anyway, all I have left to say here is.... King's Quest will be back!!

Well, the good news is it's not cancelled.

The bad news is, if its status hasn't changed since its announcement, that presumably means development hasn't moved forward at all. Still, better late than never.

So... is this confirmation enough to get us free copies of Quest for Infamy, or do we need to wait for the game to actually, physically be out before we can collect?

I imagine that Telltale was simply stating they aqquired the licenses when they first announced it, and probably intented to have it out at the latest around Q3-Q4 2012 before Telltale got occupied with the delay of Jurassic Park and the ambition/scale of Walking Dead. Don't forget that they originally planned Fables for Q1 2012 instead of this Summer. Telltale announcing those series so early was a first for them, whereas they typically announce games shortly before release, so we can't go off past experience to guess how early or late those games were into development when Telltale announced them in Feburary 2011.

Also, I actually don't think it would hurt to have on the timeline in my opinion.

    Yeah!
We've got to get a little more of a confirmation than this or the "Can't speak about KQ" from Jake Rodkin (a couple weeks back), I think... That could still kind of mean anything, and it's pretty much 3rd party mush -- "It just isn't cancelled" is not necessarily the phrasing of the supposed TT developer source.

I'd put both of these on the timeline, anyway -- maybe if the disinfo gets bad enough TT will feel obliged to make some kind of proper statement :D

(We've still got a few months before the QFI release, right?)

Sorry, but a "I heard it from a guy on a message forum, who is friends with another guy who works at Telltale"... Is not verifiable enough to be added to the timeline. LOL.

It can open up some speculation. But its really not the most credible of sourcing!

One of the few times I cited a message forum in the past was when it was a first hand account by someone at least tangentially related to Sierra and KQ, and the telltale project in some way. For, example I linked to a post from real and original Josh Mandel, which he made in a message board, and his opinion of the Telltale staff, based on his own discussions with them on the subject. The only other one I think I linked to, was a post by Paul Trowe (partly unreliable source, based on certain events at Replay) on relation to their attempts to acquire the KQ and other Sierra IPs from ActiVision. Not specifically Telltale related, except maybe indirectly. But interesting in regards to recent KQ development history.

Now that Telltale people are going to be out promoting a few new games in the next couple months, journalists and others need to pin them down on KQ and ask if Telltale is still planning to release a KQ game. Don't let them get away with divulging nothing. Ask follow-up questions. Don't just ask, "what can you tell us about KQ? Oh, nothing? I'll go on to next question then." Be aggressive, gaming journalists! Please tell the Telltale people that some KQ fans feel hung out to dry and deserve at least SOME info after being loyal Telltale customers for years. If Telltale can't even confirm an intent to release a KQ game, then it really looks like the game might not happen.

I think that KQ is going to be as epic as ToMI :D

This seems to be one of those "it happened to friend of a friend of mine" -cases.

TTG hasn't announced any progress, but they haven't announced cancellation either. And they seem to be reluctant to talk about it. Either they are planning to make some big announcement and don't want to spoil it or The Walking Dead Season 2 is pushing everything else behind it in the release schedule. I fear that latter might be the case. And while I like The Walking Dead, it's new acquaintance while KQ is an old love. Personally I rather would have KQ before TWD2, but there's probably more money in TWD2.

I now believe the reason TTG isn't talking about KQ is because the deal fell through. It appears that development on KQ never even began. Apparently the deal included *several* Sierra series.

Assuming there is still currently no renegotiated deal between TTG and Activision, I wonder how the Kickstarter events of the last year would affect the hypothetical new negotiations.

You certainly change your opinion fast.

All we have are conflicting rumors and personally I prefer waiting official statement before I abandon all hope.

Olaus, you are right. :-( I received some communication recently that changed my mind. But there's always hope! Things can change so rapidly, and few really know the exact current state of things.

One thing I will never waver on, though... regardless of whether or not TTG has the license... is this:

King's Quest WILL be back, better than ever!!

    In other news:
“They had [the King's Quest rights], and we were going to license it from them to make the remakes. I wouldn’t do a King’s Quest without Roberta. [Telltale senior VP of publishing] Steve Allison told me that they have the rights but they don’t have the bandwidth.” Allison offered to look into sub-licensing King’s Quest out to Replay, but Trowe hit a dead end when he brought the conversation over to Activision. ”I talked to the guys at Activision and they were like, ‘No, we’re pulling it [from Telltale] because we’re going to do it ourselves.’”
This is the first public mention of Activision’s plans for King’s Quest since the Telltale connection was first revealed in early 2011. We’ve reached out to Activision for comment and will update accordingly when we hear back. Think about the possibilities though. More Leisure Suit Larry, post-release content updates, a planned F2P casino game, and the possibility of an entirely new game from Roberta Williams. It’s like 1987 all over again. Trowe is just as much excited gamer as he is industry professional, but wouldn’t you be too?

Funny, I just posted the same thing here. Yep, looks like that's what the deal is.
