iPad - Stuck in Train Station

I am stuck in the train station and CANNOT kill the walkers! I punch them a few times and back up close enough to grab the wrench but overtime I click on it it disappears and almost looks like I have to look at it and press grab at the same time. I have died a thousand deaths doing this! Please help.

Why does he go there alone anyway???

    Whenever I punch them I die. you have to back up and pick up the wrench without punching them I think
