Tried Black Screen fix, did not work

I recently completed episode 3, began episode 4 but had to quit the game before i reached a save point. when i went to boot up episode 4 it was unavailable and i had to play the last chapter of episode 3 again. when the credits had finished rolling i started ep 4, and was told that I was attempting to rewind and that any previous save data would be lost (or something similar). when i clicked rewind the game goes to a black screen, and nothing loads. it isn't frozen, since i can move the cursor around the screen. when i force-quit and attempted again, this time declining the rewind, the same thing happens.
I started an entirely new game, only to have the same issue when trying to begin episode 2. clearly something is obstructing me from starting new episodes.
I have tried reinstalling the game, no dice. i tried the fix on this forum for an issue similar to this, i.e. choosing a save from a prior episode, same thing.
Please, help. I need to finish this game.
