Having multiple issues starting TWD

Hello there

Bought TWD in the recent steam sale, heard some good stuff about it. unfortunately cant get the ruddy thing to run! ive combed the forums and tried pretty well everything on here, including;

updating all drivers
trying all compatibility modes
turning off compatibility modes all together
disabling desktop composition
uninstalling and reinstalling
Running as Admin
making sure steam isnt running in vista compatibility
Forbidden Voodoo Magics that we shall not speak of

Darn thing either says;

thewalkingdead101.exe has stopped working

or

could not initialize direct 3d, please update drivers yadda yadda.

could i get some help?

find attached my Dxdiag. for whatever reason the support tool came up with no support data pc.zip in the file after running the exe.

    I'll go through your dxdiag.
    Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.120830-0334)

You should install the latest windows updates.

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660
    Driver Date/Size: 12/4/2012 02:17:14, 18045968 bytes

Description: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
    Date and Size: 12/13/2011 20:57:30, 4718952 bytes

Also your drivers are not actually up to date.
Please install the latest Nvidia driver and realtek HDA driver.

If the game doesn't work afterwards, please run the support tool.
for whatever reason the support tool came up with no support data pc.zip in the file after running the exe.

You don't run the .exe in the support tool, that's just 7-Zip, a program to create .zip archives. You have to run the .bat file "create_support_data.bat".

    Thanks for the quick reply!

ive updated both drivers and tried to restart, still got the 'unable to initialize direct 3D' Problem

I apologize, I said EXE when i meant BAT. the BAT runs, diagnoses, but no zip appears in folder with the information you need.

Running out of ideas here. any help you can offer is really appreciated!

I apologize, I said EXE when i meant BAT. the BAT runs, diagnoses, but no zip appears in folder with the information you need.

I can imagine three things that could cause that.
    1. You didn't unzip the support tool before you started the .bat
    2. You didn't see the information in the support tool window, asking you to press Enter
    3. Some other error occurred while running the support tool, in which case a screenshot of the output should be helpful

I don't see anything unusual in the data. There's not even any sign of a crash in the event log.
That doesn't leave me with much to work with. I'll list some things you can try though.

Please try verifying the game cache files.

I noticed you didn't update the sound driver yet, so i recommend doing that.

You should also try deleting the savegame folder
    C:\Users\Sean\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead

It's also worth trying to run the game during a clean boot (see below). Also make sure to deactivate any antivirus software that could interfere with the game.

Booting clean in Windows Vista / 7:
    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    4. Select the Services tab
    5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
    6. Click Disable all
    7. If running the game on Steam, re-check the "Steam Client Service"
    8. Click on OK
    9. Click Restart.
    10. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your settings by doing the following:

    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    3. Click Ok
    4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

Okay, updated the sound driver, thanks, completely forgot about it. reviewed the integrity of the game cache, everything was 100% A-Okay there. deleted the save game folder. Ran during a clean boot, had the same issue. im running out of options here.

Still havent managed to even run the game, just keeping running up against this direct 3D problem.

    Please run the DirectX updater.

If that doesn't help, you can try replacing the games prefs.prop in
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead
with the one in this .zip archive.
It has low graphics settings in windowed mode.

Weird. The good news is, that the error message is graphics related, so we have at least a hint, but i don't see why it's happening.
The only thing that's slightly unusual is that your PC is connected to a TV. It is not a problem in general, because i have seen it working, but it's the only idea i have left at the moment.

If you have any other display, you can try using it changes anything.
You can also try connecting it to the TV via DVI if it has the required input and you have a suitable cable.

ive been meaning to get a new monitor for a while, maybe now is the time. I dont have a dedicated PC monitor here, but ill try to borrow one off someone in the future and give it a go there. ive never had any issues with the TV screwing with games, if anything it appears to make things look bigger and better :P ive got everything working off HDMI.

Thanks a bunch for your help :). ill come back once ive given it a go.
