Choices from episode to episode don't hold.

Situation: I already have 1 completed playthrough of TWD that worked fine, but in preperation for 400 days I wanted to play through again making different choices.

I started a game in slot 2 and played episode 1, after the credits ran I was back on the main menu (I can't remember if that's normal or not). I clicked the 'play' button. Game 2 shows it is in episode 1 (I just finished episode 1, so it should say 'episode 2' right?) and when I click it and select 'play' it brings me to the episode select screen, it scrolls to episode 2 and I click 'play' (again) and it starts the 'previously on the walking dead' intro showing scenes from Episode 1. However the scenes are depicting choices I didn't make (I was trying to save Carley) and upon playing it's clear that Doug is alive instead of Carley.

I assume that it pulled from a preset list of choices and game state rather than using my choices.

I've tried replaying episode 1 from the last (and second to last) save point, but that didn't correct the problem. I deleted the save file and played again from the start, same problem.

I'm actually not sure if this is only a problem going from episode 1 to 2, or if it only is affecting game block 2, or anything else.

I downloaded the PC Support Tool and ran it. I've attached the zip.

Thank you for your help.

It just occurred to me. Anyone can download and use that ZIP I attached right? What kind of program would someone need to run it? What kind of information is on it? Nothing too sensitive I hope.

Well, I didn't have much luck with the prefs.prop.bak suggestion recommended. So I'll just keep waiting to see if anyone else can help.

    Gotta get going now though.

The kind of information is listed in the description of the support tool:
"The Support Tool is basically just a batch/script file that creates dxdiag/system_profiler info, searches for prefs.prop locations and related crash events, and zips the information."

You can just open the files in any text editor after unzipping them to see what they contain in detail.

Your issue seems to be caused by having multiple active prefs.prop files

    Please rename the prefs.prop in
    C:\Documents and Settings\Kyle\My Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead
    to prefs.prop.bak to deactivate it

    Then move the prefs.prop from
    C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack\default
    to
    C:\Documents and Settings\Kyle\My Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead

To also answer your questions in the other thread:
You shouldn't change the files while the game is running.

From what i have gathered prefs.prop is a file that stores the games settings, some of the decisions, and information which *.save files belong to which save slots and rewind points.
It is essential for your savegames to work.

I may have forgotten to mention that I have it on Steam. So the directory is different. That shouldn't matter much should it? Or maybe that makes all the difference in the world.

Well in the (long directory list) for the walking dead there is no prefs.prop there are 2 directories (DirectX and pack), and 4 files (fmodex.dll, installscript.vdf, steam_api.dll, and WalkingDead101).

So, should I still move the prefs.prop from default to the base directory for The Walking Dead?

And 'default' just means it's episode 1 right? That means there should be a prefs.prop in each of the other episodes? If the prefs.prop file has the save data in it why is it only messing up game 2? (or is game 1 messed up as well and I just haven't noticed because there's no episode 6 to carry the data to?)

I'm going to move the prefs.prop out of the pack/default and see if that changes things. *goes to do it now*

"default" is used for every episode i think, but the file shouldn't be there in the first place.

If you just do what i described that should help. I already saw that it's on steam from the support tool data.

It did not help. It caused the 'game 2' slot to be empty again, just like if I had .bak'ed it.

I have now moved it back to the default directory where I found it.

I see. What happens if you only rename the prefs.prop in
    C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack\default
    to prefs.prop.bak?

Default is used for every episode in the same way that expansion packs all use the same basic functions of the main game? Like Brood War needs Starcraft to function? (THAT is a dated reference if ever I've made one)

I misread your initial reply. I assumed that I didn't actually have a telltale file in my documents and that it was all in steam, so figured that you just didn't realize it was a steam file. I went and looked where you told me and there it was. Sorry for the confusion.

Ok, I've made the changes and now I'll test it out.

I had tried that when reading the other person's thread. If I do that then the save slot 2 is empty (I'm still confused as to why it only affects slot 2.)

I had been confused about your instructions and had just moved it into the steam base directory before.

This time I did exactly as you suggested. moving the steam file to the my documents file (after .bak'ing the one that was already there)

The result was the same. Save slot 2 is empty.

I don't know anything else you could try to get your slot 2 back, but in general there should not be any prefs.prop in
    C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\
or any of it's subfolders, so that's at least some progress, because it prevents future issues.

Hu... I wonder how it got there in the first place then. Strange. But I guess knowing that it's not supposed to be there is... helpful? Maybe not in recovering the game, but I'll make sure that none of the prefs.prop files are in the steam file and hopefully that will fix the issue.

one of the suggested things in the forum was to disable steam cloud updating. How do I do that?

In Steam, right click TWD and select "properties". Open the tab "updates" and remove the checkbox from "Enable Steam cloud synchronization for TWD"

You fixed it. You get victory music!
