Telltale Vs. Steam

What is the difference between game play on a Mac with a Steam key vs a Telltale product key?

I see people who bought the game on Amazon and are unhappy that the product key they got doesn't work for Steam.

I haven't done any gaming since switching to a Mac years ago (The last game I got excited about was Diablo 2 if that's any indication of how long I've been out the gaming world.) But I'm really looking forward to playing TWAU.

I don't have a steam account, so is there a difference for me? (I know what Steam is and how it works, but I don't understand the difference or advantages of the two.)

    I just purchased the App on this website. I'm hoping they send me a Steam Key soon so I can start downloading the game on my Mac.
