The Walking Dead - Season One - Steam Issues

So, I can get the game running, but only with the options saved for running it as an administrator with backwards compatibility with Windows XP with Service Pack 2. Well, at least it runs so far.

But a problem has arisen! I can't type in Shift-Tab to chat with my friends on Steam while playing! Even if I open it from the Steam library. Even if I verify the game cache. Even if I restart Steam. Even if I restart my computer. Re-installing hasn't helped, either. A friend tries to chat with me on Steam while I play the game to keep me from being scared, and I can't even see what she says because the game is decidedly Steam unfriendly.

Please follow the instructions to run the TWD Support Tool and post the download link to the resulting "TWD_support_data_pc.zip" to your next reply in this thread.

The problem and your initial crashes might actually be caused by running Steam or the game in compatibility mode, which it sometimes does by itself.

Please check the properties of the Steam.exe, your Steam icons, and the games .exe files, and disable any compatibility mode settings.
Sometimes compatibility mode is checked, but is grayed out. Then you have to click on "Change settings for all users" at the bottom to disable the checkbox.
Afterwards try if the game works.

  • "WalkingDead101.exe has stopped working." This is the response when I don't use a Windows XP Compatibility Mode while running the game on Windows 7. If I do, the game works, but does not allow the use of the Steam Interface via Shift-Tab. I already explained this to you in enough detail. Can we move on to the next level of troubleshooting instead of in circles, please? Thank you.

Suggest that you save your time and the time of your MANY unhappy Steam customers by teaching them a similar technique. A Steam default is to run in Vista Compatibility. This makes The Walking Dead unplayable on Steam.

Have you checked that the steam overlay is enabled?

If that's the case and it still doesn't work, I wouldn't be surprised if the overlay didn't work in XP compatibility mode.

I suggested disabling compatibility modes, because your crash log implies that your very first TWD crash was actually caused by a compatibility mode, and there were plenty of people with the same problem and same error code before. Windows sometimes activates compatibility modes automatically, and it is known to make the game crash.

If you make sure compatibility mode is disabled for both steam and the games .exe the game might actually work, and the steam community issue could vanish as well.
I suggest you try disabling it as described above, and then open the Steam client. In the menu select "help/system information". Check if it actually shows "Windows 7 64-bit" under "Operating System Version:". If it does, and the game still crashes, I won't mention compatibility mode again.

If it does show anything else, the compatibility mode might be set somewhere else. Sometimes it is necessary to disable it in the registry.
In that case, please remove the entries, restart windows and try running the game.

They are not my customers. I am just a volunteer.
I've been linking to that site several times already in other cases. It was you who didn't believe me that compatibility mode is the problem. otherwise I would have just posted the link for you instead of wasting time explaining why you should try disabling compatibility mode.
