Good & Bad things about the game - Chpt. 1
This is My Humble Opinion as a player. I do not represent anyone or anything other than myself. Feel free to comment although I consider arguing on points of opinion fruitless.
The Good:
Wonderful comic-book-style environment.
--> It's got Dick Tracy and Sin City written all over it.Excellently written and narrated dialogue.
--> Mature themes presented in a mature way. And, yeah, screw the ESRB rating mafia.Good blend of both action and adventure.
--> I like adventures and I like QTE so what's not to like.Highly creative setting.
--> Albeit not totally original (Alice - Madness Returns anyone?) the "human spin" on fantasy creatures works very well. Dragging a credible cockney-spewing frog through the uncanny valley takes a lot of talent.
The Bad
Convoluted Save system
--> For the love of God, where is the quicksave button? Yes, I am a perfectionist and if I smell a mistake I want to go back and do it over quickly and painlessly. Do NOT needlessly make me jump through hoops to suit the engine/infrastructure of the software. No "Skip Scene" option
--> There are a number of reasons why one would want to replay a specific scene. Please facilitate this by allowing the player to skip the irrelevant scenes/narration. Here's a formula for ya; (Tp) represents perceived time and (t) represents actual time. (Tp) = (t)x(amount of playthroughs). Yes, for me, after seeing a cut scene for the third time it takes three times as long.Story Branching
--> At this point it is unclear what the repercussions are for choices made early on. I do know from having played Chapter one that I FEEL as though I have had little influence on the overall story. I couldn't effectively save anyone that mattered to me. I do realize the amount of permutations increase exponentially at each true branch. Still, the impact and amount of choices in this first part fell short of my expectations.
Comments
If you wanna replay some part you just have to go through it first, and then, load a scene from your already finished episode. It can be done.
Also, like you said, this is a first episode so there's not much repercussion on your choices. However, if you chose to go to Toad's, Prince-whatever dies and you save him if you go to him first. That will be a considerable change in further episodes, one person being alive or not.
No Skip Scene... man, this company is called TellTale, not Rockstar. Deal with it.
