TWD S01 - Crash after the "Connecting" screen issue

Hi everybody,

I bought the pass for the season 1 of The Walking Dead through this website a few weeks ago and installed it yesterday thanks to the provided launcher. I launched the game, downloaded every single episode without any major problem (which means, all 5 episodes and 400 Days), and began, all of that without leaving the game.

That's precisely when things got frustrating. The second time I launched the game, everything was going as normal until the "Connecting" screen : right after it, nothing, the game basically crashed (though the "music" was still playing), I couldn't move the mouse, and had to use a ctrl+alt+suppr to stop the game.

Since then, I've tried virtually everything. I'm obviously not the first to encounter this problem, so I went through all the tricks that have apparently worked for the others : reinstalling the game, turning off the internet, running the game as an admin, running it in a compatibility mode, deleting stuff I don't really know anything about (REG DELETE "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Telltale Games\Launcher), and various combinations of these. In vain.

Any help would thus be welcome, and my apologies if I've missed a giant "YOUR SOLUTION IS RIGHT HERE DUMMY" thread. I ran the Support Tool if that can help, here's what I got : http://www.sendspace.com/file/qddode

Thanks in advance.

I don't see any savegames, which is weird if you already played.

I am not sure what causes the issues, but there's a few more things you can try.

    Please rename the prefs.prop in
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead
    to prefs.prop.bak to deactivate it.

If that doesn't work, please create another windows user account and try if the game still works there.

  • Thanks a lot for the answer.

There are no save files anymore because I deleted every Telltale-related files when I tried reinstalling the game, including te ones in the "Documents\Telltale Games" folder.

I tried renaming the prefs.prop file to prefs.prop.bak, but it didn't work, a new one was just created after the next time I started the game. Otherwise, still that damn crash after the "Connecting" screen.

I also tried creating another windows user account. Actually, I had already tried installing the game on another (way better) computer and got the same problem. This time, on the same computer (the first one), same result.
Maybe some details might be useful : when I first started the game on the new windows user account, I was asked to enter login and password, the connecting screen propped, then the usual starting screen. I had only access to the first episode even though I had downloaded all of them, from the 2nd to 400 Days, on my usual user account (which is normal I guess). I left the game, restarted it, and passed the connecting screen without any problem (with, still, access to only the first episode). I then downloaded the second and third episodes, left the game, restarted it, and ... it crashed right after the connecting screen.

In a word : the problem appears only after I download additional episodes, leave the game and restart it, whether on my user account or a new one, same with another computer. Could it thus be an issue with my login and/or my internet access, even though I don't see any reason for my problem to start only after downloading more episodes ?

That's a very unusual issue and I haven't seen it before. We should do some experiments.

Since it only crashes after downloading episodes, does it start working again if you manually remove the downloaded episodes?
You can test that by simply moving the
WalkingDead102, WalkingDead103 and so on folders away from
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\SyncFs\Data\
    Don't remove WalkingDead101PatchFs though.

If it starts working again, please try if you can identify which episode makes it crash by moving them back individually.

Some progress in the investigation : the game works just fine when I remove all folders except WalkingDead101PatchFs. But the problem resumes for every single folder I put back in Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\SyncFs\Data\ . I've tried all of them individually, they all have the same effect : the game crashes after the connecting screen.

Edit : I feel kind of stupid, but the truth is ... I just have to wait. Actually, I have to wait quite a long time for such a game (compared to any game in fact), like a few minutes while my mouse is blocked after the connecting screen, then I can use ctrl+echap (instead of using the task manager through ctrl+alt+suppr), and get back to the game. I can then at last control my mouse, and after a few more dozen seconds, I get to the title screen. That's an odd and long way to get to play, but I think I'll cope with that.

Thanks in any case, and sorry for the inconvenience.
