Season 2 crashes directly after launch

Hey,

I got an issue more people seem to be having: my game crashes after starting it. I unplugged my controller and ran the support thingy. The results can be found here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/99fm7f

I hope someone can help me out, thx!

    Please delete the dinput8.dll from
    D:\Steam\SteamApps\common\The Walking Dead Season Two
and verify the game cache files.

Card name: NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M
    Dedicated Memory: 488 MB

There's a chance it won't work properly with your graphics chip though, since it doesn't meet the minimum requirements.

  • Tried that, but no luck. Actually added the dinput8.dll after some people said it helped them out. Also reinstalling does not work.

The graphics card is a 512MB card, but it probably shows up as less since 512MB can be seen as less if you use the physics based measurement for Mega (1000^2 in stead of 1024^2).

The dinput8.dll workaround is not required on windows 8.1 anymore though.

You can try if the game works if you disconnect from the internet. Make sure all Network adapters are disabled.

  • Thanks for trying to help me out, but unfortunately disabling both my network adapters does not help. Do you have any other ideas?

We can try some things, but I am not sure if anything will help.

You can try replacing the games prefs.prop in
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead Season Two
with the one in this .zip archive.
It has low graphics settings in windowed mode.

Just to be sure, please also try uninstalling and reinstalling the game.

Then try running it during a clean boot (see below).

    Booting clean in Windows 8.x:
    1. At the start screen, type in "msconfig" and press enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    4. Select the Services tab
    5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
    6. Click Disable all
    7. If running the game on Steam, re-check the "Steam Client Service"
    8. Click on OK
    9. Click Restart.
    10. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your settings by doing the following:

    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    3. Click Ok
    4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

  • I already tried reinstalling, but with no luck.

The clean boot didn't help :(

For the settings file I'm encountering something strange, as there is no file to replace. In the folder you mentioned, which is empty, there are 3 subfolders, which are all empty as well. I put the file in the folder you mentioned (without replacing anything, as there was nothing to replace), but with no luck. (this was in a clean boot btw)

  • I'm having the same problem too

That's odd. I've seen that in a few cases, but I am not sure what causes it. You can try if this version works.

  • Is there anything new on this? I'd like to hear some real support from TTG or I'll be asking my money back. (although I do appreciate the help from DjNDB)

I wish I had an update, but I fear it might not work on that graphics card. There was another user with the same graphics card, but another recent TTG Game, who also had an unfixable crash. It might be related, but I can't say for sure of course.

  • I didn't see the controller thing mentioned in my searches so far, was getting crash on startup. I unplugged my controller and now it works perfectly. Why the heck is a controller plugged in causing it to crash?! Is there a fix so that it just ignores the controller and I don't have to unplug it every time? FYI, plugging in the controller after it launches doesn't cause a crash (tried it out of curiousity), it's just a launch thing apparently.

On Windows 8 the game crashes if joysticks/gamepads are connected. That bug is fixed in Windows 8.1, available for free in the Windows 8 Store.
If you don't want to upgrade yet, you can try an unofficial workaround. In short, by downloading and extracting this zip file, and copying the dinput8.dll next to the games .exe, you should be able to use the controller normally. Make sure you delete that dinput8.dll after updating to Windows 8.1, to avoid possible problems in the future.

  • Hey,

I'm having the same issue. Season 2 crashes directly after launch. I tried reinstalling the game and verifying the cache.
I also tried contacting support, but I haven't heard anything from them in a week.

Interestingly, my prefs.prop file is not in
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead Season Two
    but in
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead Season Two

    Replacing prefs.prop didn't work, though.

Other Steam games, including TWD Season One, run without any problems.

The game crashes because of the exclamation mark in the path to the steam library. There's a workaround here.
