I can't build the fire HELP

The game doesn't seem to be allowing me to progress. After getting the lighter and flicking the lit paper into the fire, I looked at the license plate, jacket, and picked up the log. I also looked at the animal being cooked, but cannot do anything else. There's an icon over the fire with an eye, indicating that I can look at it. But clicking there does nothing, I've quit and reloaded at the '16 months later' part a couple of times but to no avail.

I looked up a video walkthrough, so I know it's the game that's broken and not just me that can't figure out what to do.

Is there anything I can do? I'm at a loss for ideas.

    Can you not click on another symbol on the fire? I think this is the first time in game you can choose to look or to interact
