Are The Sam And Max Comics As Good As The Game?

edited January 2014 in General Chat

First off i'd like to apologies for this not being in the the Sam And Max sub forum but nobody posts in there so i hope you understand. Recently I got into the Sam And Max games and am currently on the last episode of season one and i was wondering if the comics have the same witty humor as the games and if they're worth getting.

They are indeed great. Before I go on though - it's hard nowadays to get them. The "Surfin' the Highway" anniversary collection, printed by Telltale in 2008, was readily available from the Telltale store back when they offered physical goods there. Right now, the book is available only rather expensively. Just forget about the hardcover version... I could never get my hands on it when I desperately tried three years ago.

I'd be first in line if Telltale did another hardcover and added The Big Sleep. If you'd like to get into the comics, that last one might be the best and cheapest start:

It was created from 2005 to 2007 by Steve Purcell and reflects his humor pretty well.

You'll have to understand that the printed comics now have up to 25 years on their backs. It's really great stuff, but of course belongs into another era now. Telltale's games really capture the anarchist humor of the comics and do not try to needlessly modernize dog and rabbit. Also, many of the colored comics of the Highway collection reprint have their firm roots in LucasArts' games, as Steve was doing these one page comics for a regular LAEC publication.

If that's not bothering you at all, I couldn't recommend them more!

  • I've always been tempted to forward a scene Steve Purcell drew of the Philippines "obviously with no reference material" to my friends in the Philippines, but I've never had the guts to do it.

Only worth it if you don't have to pay a gigantic amount to someone on eBay for it. Maybe wait until the Telltale store starts offering real merchandise again, to see if they restock it.

  • They're probably even pretty much sold out - I'd much appreciate an entirely new print. Heck, it's not as if there hasn't been a 25th anniversary recently.

  • Thanks for the info, i only just checked the prices on Amazon and they're a bit too expensive i'll take a look at the big sleep in the meantime and just hope that one of the comics will appear a bit cheaper somwhere thanks fo the help guys!
