The lack of action in ep2. Do you consider it good or bad?

edited February 2014 in The Wolf Among Us

I've been hanging around the steam forums today, and there is a considerable amount of people complaining about the lack of action sequences in episode 2, and how episode 1 was better because it had a lot of them..
Personally, I find this ridiculous.. I mean it's an adventure game! Story, characters, and dialogue are the main points here. If the game is lacking anything then it's the puzzles, but I understand why it doesn't have any since telltale wants to reach a wider audience.

So what are you thoughts on this?

  • Personally i think if anything that there was a lack of choice in this episode like no matter what we chose the outcome would be the same unlike episode 1. Don't get me wrong though I really enjoyed episode 2.

  • I thought that it was great.

  • I absolutely LOVED this episode. I could care less about "action" even if they are really freaking awesome! The game is centered on the characters, plot, and interaction. We got plenty of that and I loved it. I was constantly trying to hold back and not hurt Beast, but guess not. People called it slow paced. I found it to be an awesome pace.

  • Lack of action? I tussled with Bluebeard, smashed up Georgie's club, and brawled with Beast. There wasn't a chase sequence like in the last one, but there was plenty of action.

There were fewer explicit big one-off choices in this one, but I liked that there was a real choice in how you were going to conduct questioning and whether you would get rough with people or not.

I can see it as being fine as long as it's back soon. This episode felt more like a breather letting you just investigate and call out people, which is fine for a detective style game. I am disappointed on how short it was. If they were going with this style of an episode it should have been a lot longer then 90 minutes.

  • For me I felt like there was a lot of actions in this episode. You could brawl with Bluebead, Beast and starts smacking things around in Georgie's bar if you wanted. I like it, because I felt there was a balance between the violence and the investigating. Personally, I find investigating the case more exciting than action.

I think the amount of action was fine, especially since it had other moments that helped with the tension.

  • The action in this episode was mostly caused by your actions. You could punch the answers out of Woody/Dee, and you could choose whether or not to trash the Pudding & Pie.

  • I didn't mind, either. I'm a firm believer in "contrast" - if there was an even amount of action/exploration in each episode it would get monotonous. I feel like we're coming up to some action-packed episodes in the future, so this is the "calm before the storm". :)

Honestly, though, I don't know how people can complain about the episodes being "too short". Every time one comes out I play through several times. Are some people only playing through once and calling it a day?

  • I think like OP. The story, mystery and characters are what it's all about. Fights are okay when they are justified. I don't like them when they are shoehorned into the pacing. I was freaking out when Beauty forced herself to come with me upstairs to search rooms because I knew I was going to have to fight Beast over that shit.

  • Well, I personally wish people would realise it's about the story in Wolf, and TWD also, and not the action sequences or puzzles. Think anyone else playing these games for anything else is playing the wrong game (outside of the choice aspect). I know that people don't particularly like or agree with the term, but TT's games are essentially interactive movies now, and I think episode 2 proved this more than ever. Mostly dialog, and I'm fine with it. :) That said, I can somewhat understand people wanting more action, the fights were cool in episode 1, but they should only be used when it's in service of the story.

Personally, despite the changes made to the story, I'm happy with the episode though I'd have liked it to be longer. That may have compromised pacing however. I must say I was surprised by the direction too, as I guessed it would be full of fighting with Snow being dead and I thought the trailer heavily implied it. The ending was surprising too, though I believe it's misleading. Might be worthwhile having a thread to talk about episode 3 preview differences based on choices.
