Comic differences *big game spoilers, light comic spoilers*

edited February 2014 in The Wolf Among Us

I've been reading fables before I played the game because I already wanted to read it and I figured I would enjoy it better... But then I loved the comic and got a bit disappointed by the game.

I found some weird things I don't like at all, like Bigby being overall "less good" as a detective as in the comics. He is supposed to have such a good nose he can smell the trail of anyone much time after they are not around anymore and find them, but in this game he just catch a perfume... (although he says he would've known if an apple contained poison????) I also felt a bit bad about the moment on the first episode where Dee (or Dum I don't remember) hits him on the head (quite slowly...) from behind... I mean, Bigby would've smelled him, or at least he is fast enough to react before the hit, or even resist it without passing out... I just don't feel this is the Bigby of the comics.

I also noticed on this episode (2) that Crane smashed the magic mirror with the magic lamp. The mirror is supposed to be able to resist any hit without shattering (they could still mend this by making it be ok again by the beginning of ep 3, but I doubt so...)

Am I the only one seeing this/feeling this way? I still like the game, it keeps the interest and the story is good, but I just don't get the feel that it goes along so well with the comic. I expected it to be something like the first "thing" that happens in the comic, the rose red case, but I'm not really that satisfied. Also, I found this episode too short and lacking exploration/deduction/something... but that's another topic.

Sorry for such a long post, and if my English is not as good as it could (I'm Spanish) but I wanted to talk this with somebody who could understand.

I read the comic before the game came out, so I too went into this "fully informed", I guess.

I seem to recall in the beginning of the comic Bigby expressing "awkwardness" at being in human form as he wasn't yet fully used to it - this isn't really touched on in the game at all, but maybe that could be the explanation for why he seems less capable. (At least that's what I tell myself, haha!) Honestly, if Bigby were super awesome at everything there'd be no game, so I'm willing to let it slide a bit.

I know what you mean, though. At the end of Episode 1 I assumed that Snow would "come back to life" because she was such a popular character with the Mundys (in the comic they mention that the truly popular characters are basically immortal.) So, in that way, it was sort of a cheap shot/easy to pick apart that WAIT A MINUTE SHE CAN'T BE DEAD! But, you know, that wasn't the case at all.

Something that has bothered me a bit, though, since the game came out is the "glamours" deal. All non-human Fables who can't pass as human have to live on the Farm - but not game-exclusive Mr. Toad and his son. Somehow Colin the pig is always being booted back to the Farm, but Mr. Toad gets off with a warning? Kind of inconsistent.

But, you know, I'm basically considering the game an homage to the comic rather than 100% canon - and it is helping me not judge it too harshly.

  • Actually the mirror has said that he's been shattered several times, so that part is ok to me. I AM bothered by Bigby's abilities as a detective. He knows almost everything that has happened before anyone can even react to the crime scene (I'm referring to Rose Red's "murder") But, like ImpDragon, I see the game more as homage than canon. It's still an awesome game.

And I think if Bigby were as amazing of a detective in the game as he is in the comics, the game would maybe be too easy. Bigby should have known that the head did not belong to Snow. He's been obsessed with her scent since the moment he first smelt it.

  • Didn't Bigsby mention in the comics that when he's in the city he has to smoke a lot to dull his senses because he can smell every single thing and that it bothers him too much? If that's the case then that's why he just doesn't walk around smelling all the clues out.

  • ImpDragon, yeah, they are totally ignoring Toad and his son now that you mentioned it xD And this illegal glamours thing seems weird to me too, but I'm actually intrigued by how will they justify it so it's ok.

Subject18, you are right, I didn't think of that. I even think Bigby himself said once he could smell here anywhere under any perfume.

Hawk404, I get what you say, but in the comics he already used his nose in cases in the big city. He just stops smoking, sniff around and there you go, got a trail.

I insist, I like the game and while I think they could have made something a little more canon, I agree that it's ok while they maintain the story interesting. I just like pointing out these little things that annoy my nerd fanboy mind :P

PD: I really hope they end up using more Jack in the story, they teased me in a quite cruel way having him appear just for a couple minutes.
