Questions About the Donkeyskin Coat

edited February 2014 in The Wolf Among Us

Faith's donkeyskin coat is quite an enigma. It's possibly red herring unrelated to the murders of Faith and Lily, but even so, I can't figure out why it was stuck inside Toad's char.

That coat itself might be of some value to Fables. It is a magical coat that, in the case of Faith, glamoured her long ago to make her look like something less than the most beautiful girl in her father's kingdom. It was made from her father's magic donkey that would poop gold when prompted. Presumably that power ended when the donkey was skinned for Faith's disguise. It may be valuable in the right hands, but it's not obvious how that would be.

Now, ow did it get inside Toad's building? She didn't bring it with her when she went to see the Woodsman; it's not something she'd wear on a "date," and she doesn't take it with her when she leaves. Yet the next day Toad has it hidden in his chimney, and implies that he confiscated it from a previous tenant. But Faith had been living with Lawrence in that building, not in Toad's building. So where/how did Toad get his webbed mitts on it? (Also worth noting: Toad lies a lot.) Still, it's aggravating that Bigby didn't question Toad further about it or Faith.

Also, Toad says that the Tweedle who assaulted him and Toad Jr. wasn't after the Coat. If not the coat, then what else could either Faith or the Woodsman have of any value to them? (The Woodman's magic axe?)

Finally, it looks like Faith left a short farewell note on the coat, for Lawrence. Why would she leave a farewell note on her most prized possession that she then "left" at a rundown apartment building that she, maybe, never even lived at? Did she mean for the letter and the coat to go back to Lawrence?

I can't figure this one out either. I have a vague theory about her planning to use some sort of glamour magic go into hiding, either to evade the debt she accumulated at Georgie's place or evade the Tweedles who were after her for whatever she took from their employer. Maybe the donkeyskin coat can be used as some sort of conduit for that since it's already a magical item or maybe she was trying to reawaken whatever magic was stored inside. Or maybe it's just a precious keepsake of hers, like her ring.

I thought it was mentioned somewhere that Faith had moved out of Lawrence's place. My memory's little fuzzy though (it was 4 months ago, Telltale!). But if so, then it might be possible that she lived there at Toad's place.

As for what she took, it was apparently some kind of book since when Dee broke into Lawrence's place, he went over to search the bookshelf.

Finally, farewell note. Again, that might have to do with her plan to go into hiding. Maybe she was planning on running away that night and wanted to give that note to Lawrence to tell him that she was sorry because she has to leave him. It would certainly make her death a bit more tragic if she was "just one day away from retirement." This is all just wild speculation though.

  • "The Wolf Among Us" will be another "Lost". Writers do not have a plan, no idea how end the story. Lots of clues and mysteries in each episode but no logical explanation. Donkeyskin coat is a filler.

  • The donkeyskin coat is what makes her fairytale work. It belongs to her. Without it, she's not a complete character in a way. It's a memento of her happy past and a confirmation of her identity. That could have been the reason why it had to be included.

  • Also when Bigby jokes that he maybe should be arresting her instead of Woody, she replies:

"I won't be doing this for much longer, so now is your chance." which also implies that she was going to "retire" soon.

  • Not so sure about that...many of the questions left DO have some sort of loose connection...the problem is that there are several themes interwoven in the narrative that have to do with specific characters and their motivations (Faith, Toad, glamours).

For instance, your Donkeyskin Coat has a background that the donkey could once produce gold from its shit...something related to the term "Bricklebit" which Bufkin mentioned. So, perhaps as a means to restore the properties of the coat, Faith stole an object that could do the job and finally get her out of the poverty she and her husband ended up in...except someone found out about it and had her killed...

See? The Donkeyskin serves a purpose, it just has yet to be revealed. Perhaps we all just need a little..."Faith".

  • At first I assumed she actually lived in the same building but after ep2 that completely went away because Woodsman didn't know her, unless she used the cloak when she was at the apartment and looked different (ugly)?
