Limits on types of Fables they can use in the universe?

I'm not the biggest reader of the comics (only started on Vol. 2 a bit ago), but I've been curious on what the limit is for incorporating characters. Because while the main characters are actually fables, Bloody Mary and the Jersey Devil are technically folk tales. Heck, they aren't even very old ones either and Jersey is an American one for sure. So can they just use any source of story for the character inspiration in the series? Like say an old Russian folktale or something?

  • Well, certainly, these new characters like Bloody Mary or the Jersey Devil are Urban Legends/myths who are not that old, like the legend of Chupacabra etc.
There are as well characters driven from old fairy tales obviously, like Beauty, Snow etc etc. I don't really think they have a limit, every myth/legend/fairy tale is probably a Fable. And no do not expect Fables like Slender Man, Jeff The Killer etc since they're modern modern, the game timeline is set in the 80's.(Jersey Devil folklore is from 1909).

  • The universe is pretty much open to any character from fairy tales, folklore, myth, legend, fables, and various literary sources. The term "Fable" in the universe isn't used in the way that it normally is, rather it's a catch all phrase for all of these non-mundane characters. Urban legends weren't really explored in the comics (though I've heard other readers say that the Jersey Devil appeared or was mentioned, however, I can't remember that. There are so many characters who make an appearance it's easy to forget some). But since urban legends do technically fall under the blanket of folklore, I guess they're fair game.

The only real "restriction" that I've noticed is that the sources tend to be older, nothing too modern.

  • Sweet. I've been planning a fanfic for the series and just wanted to know if the original characters based on folktales I've borrowed from would be appropriate for the universe. Thanks darkomihajloski and Violet_Zephyr.
