Can't start TWD 2 - black screen

I completed TWD 1 + 400 Days. Now I start TWD2 and have a problem:
1) black screen (with lower resolution, than my default resolution)
2) in second I return to desktop

I upgraded NET framework, deleted TWD2 saves folder, upgraded video drivers, tried to press Alt+Enter, checked steam cash files, started the game with administrator rights and 98/Me compatibility . The game doesn't start.

Here's my data files: https://www.sendspace.com/file/t5ivd7

I apologize for the inconvenience. After looking over your support tool information, there doesn't seem to be any issues with your file directory. Below are a few possible solutions (You may have tried a few of these, but I will provide all of the potential solutions to resolve the issue below):

    1) Ensure you have the latest drivers for both your graphics card, and your computer’s BIOS

    2) Restart your system

    3) Unplug your gamepad (and all other USB devices other than keyboard/mouse) and plug in headphones to the audio out jack.

    4) Verify your cache if you purchased through Steam (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335)

    5) Run the game as admin

    6) Run the game in compatibility mode (right click on game’s icon, click properties, click compatibility tab , and we recommend running the game in Windows 98/ME ) (We recommend Windows 98/ME)

    7) Reinstall the game

    8) Make sure that the Steam application is not set to a compatibility mode (right click on steam and click properties, then check compatibility, and make sure that it is not checked to play in a different OS)

    9) Disable Steam Overlay, if you purchased through Steam (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3168263)

    10) Opt out of the Steam Beta, if you purchased through Steam (http://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/828934424165581080/)

  • Nothing from these tips works. Any other suggestions? Maybe you have some generic working prefs.prop?

    I've noticed one regularity:

    1) when I start the game, it creates folder C:\Documents and Settings\KoS\Documents\telltale games\ STEAM\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead Season Two\ (notice space before " Steam")

    2) but when I start with compatibility mode 98/Me, it creates correct folder, but with lover case name: C:\Documents and Settings\KoS\Documents\telltale games\the walking dead season two\

administrator rights don't have any influence

    Anyway, nothing works for me

After looking over your support tool information again, it appears that your Season One prefs.prop file, and two save files from Season One are inside your Season Two save file directory folder here:

C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead Season Two

Please delete these files, and start Season Two again while connected to the internet, and you should not experience the black screen issue anymore.

  • I tried everything:
    1) deleted Season 1 folder
    2) deleted Season 2 folder
    3) deleted Tell Tale folder completely

Everytime I have the same result.

Now, when I reinstalled the game, it doesn't create correct folder "The Walking Dead Season Two". I have two outcomes: 1) vanilla exe created " STEAM" folder 2) compatibility 98/Me creates no folder at all

  • Okey. I did it.

    1) I made backup of the game through Steam backup option
    2) Uninstalled the game
    3) Installed it from backup to C:\STEAM

    The game started.

Now I have to find out, how to get my Season 1 saves read in Season 2

Now that you are able to successfully start the game, please run the support tool again, and I should be able to assist you with recovering your save files.

  • Thanks, but they work. I didn't expect, that the game will ask about old saves only when I press Play and choose chapter.

I apologize for the delayed response, and for any inconvenience this has caused you. After looking over your support tool information, your system should be able to run the game successfully. I recommend making sure both Steam and The Walking Dead: Season Two are both installed to a local drive, then restart the game, and it should run successfully.

Hi guys, I just wanted to confirm that the method described by AntiKoS worked for me either!

  • Hello. I have same issues. I have tried every solution mentioned here, but no luck. I have game installed through steam on Win7 x64. I have dedicated SSD partition for games so TWD2 isn't installed on regular C: disk. Also my Users folders is on my data partition. When starting game I have noticed that resolution changes to something much smaller, because I see there glimpse somewhat badly scaled mouse cursor. Also when it quits, my opened windows on desktop are moved more to the bottom right corner.

Anyway here goes my analysis results: https://www.sendspace.com/file/8jvdcg

After looking over your support tool information, I noticed that Season One, and Season Two were installed differently. The file directories are as follows:

    Season One:
    d:\internals\users\Fredy\Documents\Telltale Games\the walking dead

    Season Two:
d:\internals\users\Fredy\Documents\Telltale Games\steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead Season Two

If Season One runs successfully for you, I recommend try removing \steam\steamapps\common\ from the directory, and have \The Walking Dead Season Two\ folder directly in your \Telltale Games\ folder, then start the game, and see if you are able to start it successfully.
