I have never been able to decide between Secret or LeChuck's Revenge. On the one hand Secret has brilliant writing and hilarious jokes, and on the other - LeChuck's revenge is a larger and deeper world with some truly baffling puzzles. I supposed Secret had the bigger impact of the two, and I still find Ghost LeChuck and his phantom ship/crew beautiful to look at. So I shall have to vote for Secret Of Monkey Island.
LeChuck's Revenge for me, and I also played them in order. Was never a huge fan of CMI but that could be because I've only played it once and had my cousins looking over my shoulder the whole time telling me the solutions, not the best way to play an adventure game. I wasn't happy with the way it resolved MI2's cliffhanger but seeing all the love it's getting here I've decided to track it down and give it another shot
MI2 because of the more explorer kinda feel just ahead of MI3 because of the excellent graphics. Then I dunno, I guess MI1 by a few mms because I think that MI4's kinda 3d is so empty and unpersonal.
I picked CMI, even with Secret being the first one I played. I loved the first one quite a bit, but CMI edges it out for me just because I love the artwork and music, and I think it's the funniest out of the 4. Plus the great voice acting really adds to it.
I'm on the fence between 2 and 3.
I always considered 2 to be better in terms of story, but in the overall look of things, I have to break it down to see.
Both had great music, that really popped out of the game, but CMI actually reused some tunes from MI2 itself. Also MI2 used some of the most amazing transition effects for the music (woodtick, anyone?) so MI2 wins this.
Graphics, for the time of the release are great on both games, but beyond time of the release CMI still looks good today, while MI2 looks dated. CMI wins this.
Length is just right in MI2, too short in CMI. MI2 wins this.
Story on both games is good, but MI2 was completly original, while CMI used some elements from earlier games (insult sword fighting, for example), so MI2 wins.
Both games have terrible, un-fulfilling endings. a tie.
Voice acting on CMI is great and does not take away from the experience for fans of the series (imo), but then again, MI2, i feel, is perfect without voice acting, while CMI can't pull off some of the jokes in text only. MI2 wins this, surprisingly.
In short, it turns out to be a landslide for MI2. Voted
MI 2 hands down...loved it as a kid...still love it today...mainly the artwork and the massiveness of it, oh and Threepwood's look. Curse is a close second....though I do feel like a heretic because it wasn't a Bruce game....technically.
I'm also on the fence with 2 and 3. I have to give 1 credit, as it definitely did set the stage for the rest of the series, but 2 is twice the game 1 ever was, and had more of everything that made 1 a good game.
But both 2 and 3 were deeply engrossing games (3 being the first MI game I played) for different reasons, but with the same lovable cast, mytharc and humor.
Ultimately I have to say Curse, as whenever I think of Monkey Island, the beautiful scenery and the wonderful music of the 3rd game come to mind. It was just the game that drew me into the world, at a time when PC gaming was at its pinnacle and I was at the age where I could devote hours upon hours to playing excellent games like Curse, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Morrowind and Thief 1/2.
Two was great and epic, but one had more classic moments than two. Two went darker and did everything a sequel should do bar the Raiders/Temple of Doom argument.
Three has an amazing art style. And when you play the game, compared to the other characters, Guybrush doesn't look like a beanpole, just more like your average joe. If Fry from Futurama was a pirate. The puzzles in CMI were way harder to figure out than MI2. The gold tooth puzzle anyone? Both puzzles relied on player ingenuity, with no hints whatsoever.
I would say though that the first three tie. I don't think one can get leeway over the other. It's really personal preference between the three.
LeChuck's Revenge at number one, with Curse a close second and Secret an even closer third.
I'm kinda conflicted about Escape. On one hand, it's a great adventure game with several brilliant moments that made me genuinely laugh out loud and fun puzzles, basically everything that makes Monkey Island so appealing. On the other hand, it totally screwed up the continuity by
making Herman Toothrot Elaine's grandad
, which makes no sense given what we know from previous games.
The controls and graphics (actually pretty good for it's time) are issues too, but not as great in my opinion as the gaping plot holes. If Escape hadn't completely violated existing continuity I would have a better time accepting it because it's actually a pretty fun game.
Hey there - I just signed up and pre ordered Tales of MI. Can't wait to play it.
I voted for Curse of MI - great game from start through finish. I often hear complaints that it would be too short, but thats just because it is that good, you dont want it to come to an end.
MI1 - very first adventure game I played back in 1992. Lucky me. Great game. I am looking forward for the SE.
MI2 - best riddles and atmosphere of the series, but disappointing end. Still great - I have replayed it many times. I hope there will be a SE of that one too.
MI4 - well still a good game, but it cannot match with the other 3.
Yeah, Zoinker, I will never understand why they did that... It's only something long-time players would even care about -- and yet it made no sense to those long-time players and only irritated them. Why would you even attempt to mess around with the continuity like that?!
I loved Monkey Island 2: LeChucks Revenge...
and i think the ending was great...
it makes you wait for the 3rd Part... which still isn't out now
which not means that i didn't liked CMI
Curse of Monkey Island by far. My personal favorite game of all time.
Also, I might get lynch-mobbed for this but what the hey, I thought MI2 was one of the weaker entries in the series. (Though still it was still far better then Escape. ) The hard mode was too hard and the easy mode was too easy. Also I thought the ending was hackneyed and felt last minute. Don't get me wrong, though. Aside from the aforementioned criticisms it was an outstanding adventure game, I just didn't find it as strong as 1 and 3.

I also prefer CMI to MI2, but MI1 is my personal favorite, partially nostalgia and partially because I love the puzzle design.
This poll is a great indication of how good the Monkey Island series as a whole is when you consider that a classic game like Secret of Monkey Island is rated way back in 3rd place!
CMI for mine as it was the 1st I played all those years ago.
Be also interesting to see a poll after the completion of all 5 Eps of Tales to see how that rates by comparison. I'll bet a lot of fans new to the Monkey world will have that as their fav...

If you get lynch-mobbed, count me in as dying for your cause; I completely agree with you.
Close call between MI2 and CoMI.
They both have great puzzles and very funny and original ideas.
I will go with MI2 in the end though - 'cause it's so immense!
picked CoMI... While I love MI2 and doubted between the two, I love the graphical style and voice overs of CoMI... it stays pretty true to the series story arch and buildup while having full voice overs.
MI2 is still one awesome game and if it would have voice overs it would have won over CoMI.
SoMI is still the game that got me into adventure games again (played LOTS of old AGI games before MI came out), it's a bit "dull" compared to the next two games.
I hate EMI.
Tales brings back to old feeling of the original series.
Curse is my favorite of the four but Secret and Revenge are no slouches either. Escape was just a disgrace with the grim fandango controls and I couldn't get into the story or puzzles.
MI2's puzzles were kinda unlogical and weren't the best unlike MI1 where the design of the puzzles was brilliant. Tales are doing it right and I think that Tales is way better than MI2. And I vote for MI1!

I love that game soooo much
And I played 2,1,3,4.

Also the first MI that I played btw.

But I'd say apart from the dodgy ending, CMI was probably the best game I ever played

Nevertheless: if Telltale keeps it up with Chapters 3-5, then I'll have to say Tales will end-up being my favourite of the lot.

Thus far, Tales is between 3 and 4.
