If your new to game of thrones - Character bios for show characters
I'll give a summary of the characters present from the show who appear or who are mentioned in episode 1 and what your meant to know about them. This contains spoilers for the show up to season 3.

Characters who appear
Cersei- The queen regent for her tyrannical son, Cersei cares about her children, herself and her brother Jamie and... thats about it. cersei despises anyone else particulalry younger maidens who remind her of what shes lost. A lannister, Cersei has power (though not as much as she thinks) and is extremely egotistic. She absolutely despises Margery Tyrell who she assumes is trying to take her son away from her. Cersei holds a dark secret (along with most characters) shes in love with and regularly has sex with her twin brother, all her children are illegitimate incest bastards, this slipped out in rumours though despite being true cersei denies it.
Margery - Born in highgarden ( a southern house). Margery has been schooled on how to play the game at court, smiling at everyone while keeping your true feelings hidden. While having her own agenda, (becoming queen is of major importance to her)Margery is essentially a good person overall like all the tyrells. She cares greatly about her handmaidens but has little love for the queen or the king who she is set to marry.
Tyrion - A dwarf and last born son Tyrion is a drunk, a womaniser and despised by many as the imp. However Tyrion really is a good guy overall, caring about the people looked down on or at misfortune as often being in that situation himself. Tyrion likes annoying cersei due to the two having a poor relationship and even more so the violent king joffrey. Tyrion used to be hand (main advisor and decision maker for the king) but is now relegated to master of coin now his father thas taken the role. Tyrion is smart even by kings landing standards and like many enjoy playing the game however he has his issues.
Ramsey - Violent, unpredictable and the definiton of a sociopath Ramsey enjoys nothing more than tortuing and killing people. The bastard son of the feared roose bolton Ramsey is feared throughout the north. A decent fighter but more due to his cruelty rather than skill.One of his favourite pastimes is releasing women into the woods and hunting them down with a pack of dogs. Ramsey despises being a bastard and never likes being reffered to as such.
Characters mentioned
Eddard Stark - The noble Ned stark was warden of the north for a generation. Fate took him to kings landing to be hand of the king. Robert baratheron. Ned tried to rule however he was unprepeared for the secrets and lies of kings landing despite his honour ned was manipulated and after attempting to expose Cersei's secret he was executed under the orders of Joffrey labelled as treason.
Robb Stark - The embodiment of his father Robb rides south with an army, To avenge is father and have a free north. There have been many problems and the major one at the moment is that he ahs betrayed one of his allies trust (lord walder) by failing to acknowledge a marrige pact. Now at the wedding of his uncle to one of freys daughters Robb hopes this will right the wrong.
Joffrey - A little immature psycho, Joffrey following the death of his father is now king of the seven kingdoms. Regulalry ordering executions, decapitations and other issues on a whim Joffrey is cruel beyond. Despite this Joffrey is essentially a coward relying on his men for everything. He is soon to be married to Margery tyrell
Tywin - The current hand of the king. Tywin head of the lannisters recently took the position of hand of the king, Tywin is wise and brutal ultimately disappointed in his three children and grandson. Tywin cares about the continuation of the family line above all else.
Jamie - A member of the kings guard. Jamie is reffered to as the kingslayer, due to him murdering the mad king aerys during the final battle long ago. Jamie is highly sort after however he loves his twin sister Cersei. Jamie was freed by the Robb starks mother after he was captured in hope he would return her daughters to her. On the way back Jamie was mutilated and now only has one hand. Jamie had an overopinion of himself as the best fighter in the seven kingdoms, without his sword hand he feels pointless and weak.
Olenna - The grandmother of the Tyrell family, witty and cynical. She taught Margery all she knew.
Sansa - The oldest daughter of Eddark stark. Sansa went to kings landing dreaming of marrying a prince. This was shot down when her prince charming had her father executed in front of her and made her look at his severed head. Naive, Sansa just wants to go home however with her rebel brother approaching Sansa is essentially a hostage at the mercy of Joffrey who regularly abuses her. She recently was forced to marry Tyrion lannister
Renly - Renly was one of the many rebel kings who tried to overthrow Joffrey. he was defeated by his brother Stannis in a bizzare murder the night before a battle. This trick made the Tyrells who were aligned with him choose to side with the Lannisters. Despite being homosexual and being in love with her brother Loras, Renly was betrothed to Margery Tyrell before his death . However the Marriage was never consummated according to Margery so she is free to marry again as a maiden.
Roose Bolton - One of the bannerman of house Stark. However lately Botlon considered cold, sneaky and cruel has become irritated with Robb's starks poor decisions. The definition of a psychopath Roose dosn't really care who he hurts yet takes no pleasure from it.
