In addition to @Raging_Blades thread, the first episode begins in the final minutes of Season 3 Episode 9, "The Rains of Castamere", if you watch the show and want to place the beginning.
You will miss out on a great deal of detail if you don't watch the show... I highly highly recommend that you do watch it. You will get a whole lot more excitement and depth out of the game if you know who people are and what their stories are and the context of the events that have happened, and will happen in future episodes.
