lag during action sequences

The game runs fine until I have to do an action scene. Anything where shooting involves makes the mouse really laggy and I end up dying multiple times before I can get it to work, and even then it just happens out of luck. Having particular problems in episode 4 when trying to back up the stairs while shooting walkers as I can't back up and shoot at the same time and every time I do shoot, it takes too long for it to actually let me shoot again.

I've already tried lowering the graphics, resolution and shadows to no avail. I literally cannot get passed this part of the game because of this and I would rather not have any frustration induced rage fits at my laptop, so any help in getting around this would be much appreciated. I would like to get back to the story please
