Tales of Monkey Island Game Art in episodes

edited December 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
my first thread, so hopefully it will be an interesting one, i noticed that a few people have commented on the new art work of the new monkey island game, i do admit that as a monkey island fan, im not too keen on the 3d design, but i have still pre-ordered it and looking forward to playing it, it will be my first telltale game

now my big question is, that ive noticed some people say they love the curse of monkey island cartoon design and some love the others designs within the series, i personally love the art in monkey island 2 (its my favourite monkey island out of the series) i know that Tales of monkey island is coming out in episodes, i was thinking wouldnt it be interesting if each episode was done by different artists, for example, like the Animatrix or Batman gotham knight. that way it would please everyone, and plus it would be interesting, to see different tones it gives to each episode

tell me what you guys think?

It's an interesting idea, but I think it would mess with cohesion between episodes. Also Telltale reuse their models (and sometimes locations) from one episode to the next, so if new models with new textures and design attributes were needed for each episode, it would severely bog down production.

Yeah, its a nice idea. I'm not sure this release would lend itself (given budget/time constraints from what i've heard) to something like this, and don't forget each episode is effectively one of the acts in the game from the last games. It would be a little odd playing with the artwork in what is effectively the same game, but would be fun :-)
  • I think the TMI visuals 'starbuccaneers-style' is too bland and lacks sufficient detail to make you feel part of the piratey game-world. Greater detail is easier to achieve with CMI style graphics as the detail is literally just painted in the background. I think a CMI graphic style should have been adopted.

now coming to the end of the season of Tales, ive actually enjoyed the 3D feel on it,but for another Monkey Island game, i still wouldnt mind seeing a Monkey Island Tribute game, where different artist make an episode that either contributes to one big story or single episode storys

actually i wouldnt mind seeing the cartoon style from tales (like the illustrations from voodoo ladys tarot cards at the start of the chapters) as episode

You can't drastically change the art style in a game developed the way Telltale's games are made. The later games in a season rely on the ability to re-use some assets, whether they're character models, locations, or objects, to speed along development and allow for the schedule that they have. It's a lot like a TV sitcom that re-uses a lot of sets and costumes week after week. Things like The Animatrix and the horrible Batman rip-off release require completely different teams that are generally large enough to do this sort of thing on their own doing their work concurrently. Telltale is nowhere near being big enough for that kind of development to be done in-house by them while keeping anything close to a decent release schedule, and they'd also end up eating a lot of resources and cost in the meantime.

Ah true, you do have a point, maybe lucasarts could do it?

It would be a pretty bad idea if all the episodes had different art styles. When it comes to this sort of thing, you have to be consistent otherwise they'll feel like separate games. :/
