Willingham has a lot to get through before Fables ends

edited February 2015 in The Wolf Among Us

I was going over past Volumes of the Fables comics and I've noticed that Willingham still has a lot to cover before Fables ends... Whether or not he plans to keep some of these things open-ended has yet to be seen of course.

Firstly, the main story:

  • Snow and Rose's conflict

  • Bigby' restoration

  • Brandish's trial by combat

These points will definitely be the main story for the last 2 issues.

Ok.

Now for the side story points that seem to have been set aside or simply forgotten about:

  • Gepptto's marriage to the Blue Fairy (this was referenced constantly in issues 140-143, I understand that it sin't important, but the whole thing has been dropped recently)

  • Geppetto's plan for The Farm and Haven (He has acquired a piece of the Sacred Grove and Flycatcher has vision of his plan happening, it has also been forgotten about it seems)

  • Cinderella's assassination of Bellflower (Maybe this will happen, but we haven't heard anything about this plan since 145...)

  • Grimble's mission (What is he doing? This will likely be revealed before the end, but it doesn't seem to be going anywhere)

  • The final 3 Fates of the Cubs (Conner, Blossom and Ghost have their Fates to be revealed; we have an idea of who will get whose, but it's being revealed quite late imo)

  • The Toxic Dream (This was the Last Story involving Prince Charming, I feel it needs to be explored as the blurb states that it will involve 'multiple Fables' and it seems that Charming is going to kill Sinbad, can this really be ignored and just left open?!)

  • The future of Fabletown/The Farm and Ambrose's marriage to Lake (Fables 150 will have to explain this and I hope it isn't rushed in just a few panels cuz that would be bad...)

  • The dark monsters in Fabletown Castle; these were shown but aren't yet in the story...

So I've done the super-nerdy thing of pointing it all out, what do you ppl think about it all???

Also if any of these points were resolved in Fairest Clamour for Glamour then please let me know as I haven't read that story arc yet.

If Willingham actually looks at this forum and see's my posts about what he has left to do he'd be like "I fucking hate this kid!" XD

Seriously, Fables has been running successfully for 13 years, if it ends rushed and with unanswered questions, fans WILL be disappointed and they will be contacting him on Twitter XP

  • I'm looking at this and remembering that the last issue will be 150 pages, everything will be revealed. Let's hope it will be revealed properly.

  • But issue 150 will have a Last Story for Boy Blue as well. That's 5 pages at least...

Willingham physically CANNOT get everything sorted in the last issue without rushing things. I would go as far to say that Willingham should have ended Fables BEFORE he announced that it was over...

  • You need to read the Fairest series and the Fairest in all the land TPB. Some of the points are addressed there.

  • I have Volumes 1-4 of Fairest but I haven't read them yet :P I also haven't read any of the Clamour for Glamour story arc...

So what points get addressed if you don't mind me asking?

  • what I want to know is how prince Charming came back, did he not die after the adversary was overthrown? I loved this series and in my honest opinion I wished they would have made the story end right after the Great War. It was a great story about them finally defeating the adversary, and then they had to drag it out killing off great characters with some useless story arcs. Bigby would still be a Hero, not after this last story arc. But at least we get to see Rose Red for what she really is a spoiled brat, who has always been jelous of Snow.

  • The series did certainly change after issue 75 (when the war ended) but I actually liked the stories after that issue! Killing off characters creates emotion, emotion equals good storytelling :)

Now Charming, basically he DID get caught in the explosion of the last portal. But his popularity as a Fable allowed him to heal and make a full recovery, he winds up in the Homelands version of India...

Read Fairest Volume 3 The Return of the Maharajah to find out more XD

  • He had better not fail in forming a satisfying conclusion, lest I lose what little remains of my worn sanity. I did not read through 149 issues of comic book alongside spinoffs for a dissapointing ending. That is a worst case scenario however. I have faith in Willingham's writing. He has over 150 pages to conclude the series and I can forsee a great ending to fables.

  • The last issue's main story will be 80 pages long, the other 70 pages are Last Stories for characters like Lake, Boy Blue etc.

Btw, would you want Fables to be continued in the future at some point? :)

  • Do I want Fables to continue?

Yes and no. The series has potential to continue for sometime longer but there is also the risk of Fables losing it's lustre over time, like the Simpsons.
It could be rivived in the future but it would be a serious gamble for it could go either way.

I do look forward to the proposed fables movie adaption and a possible season 2 though. Don't you.

  • I do indeed :)
