The Ghost of Christmas Yet-to-Come
Another way an alternate timeline/reality could be established for season 2 (special emphasis on could here, folks, this is all just speculation):
If S2 were set sometime during winter, the new villain could somehow abduct the Ghost of Christmas Yet-to-Come and force it into revealing the future seen in Willingham's comics...or at the very least, trick it into exposing the future.
The villain would then exploit his/her foreknowledge to their advantage, creating an entirely new series of events in the process.
