I like the direction they decided to take. I know a lot of people dislike Borderlands for various reasons, but it's unique and, personally, I'm a fan of dark humor and stupid jokes, so it works for me.
Yup the original plan was supposed to be much more realistic, darker, and stay truer to Mad Maxesque theme, but at last minute they decided … moreto change aesthetic and add in more humor into the game. Then BL2 took a step further and made it more cartoony and more humorous. Also, Lilith seemed to originally be both Tannis and Steele at once, and they broke both characters away from her and redesigned Lilith.
