EFMI is best of series!

Am I the only one who thinks that each installment of MI is better than its predecessor?

    I suggest you run...

I for one loved EMI, but still wouldn't say it's the best. The others won't be as understanding as I am...

Just a pitchfork for me, thanks.

Can't have an angry mob without pitchforks, you see...

np: Aesop Rock - Babies With Guns (Bazooka Tooth (Headphone Science Version))

Yeah, I think EMI was a fine game, but you won't find many who think it's the best. I like them all a lot and would have trouble ranking them, but for me EMI does sit a couple notches lower than the others on the overall charm scale.

Can I have a flaming pitchfork? Best of both worlds.

True story: Me playing EFMI in the background got my FPS playing, RPG loving roommate into adventure games. It was kind of his gateway drug into Sam and Max 104 which made him a total addict. He now plans to buy nearly all of Telltale's downloadable catalog.

This is experience - after reflection - has improved my opinion of the game. Which was positive anyway until I hopped into the "haterade" bandwagon years later, so I've flip flopped yet again.

I'm ok with people liking EFMI the best... I disagree but I am happy there is love for it..

Seems to me you can pretty much guess what games people like the most by their age..... people around age 30 seem to like 1 or 2, People around age 20 seem to like 3... and people who are strange like 4. Just kidding about the strange bit... sort of :D

the only problem I have with EFMI is that in the first and second halves of the game, its the same theme (you go around a village full of shops), and it gets really long and tiring. I couldnt play it all in one day, it gave me a headache.

and especially monkey kombat  that was the worst part.
  • edited June 2009
Oh, I don't hate it, I just don't think it's the best in the series.

That, and angry mobs are fun.

Unless you're the target of one. That's not fun at all.

    BURNNNNN BABY BURN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EFMI was the worst; Jokes where flat, puzzle where overly complex specially the clock thingy, Monk... Kom (i still am receiving therapy over that) and it lacke the piratey atmosphere.

    Yes.

I personally think it's the worst of the series. But hey, to each his own. Glad you enjoy it.
  • edited June 2009
It was ok, not the best but was good in parts but to me I will always class MI 2 as the best.

If it isn't point-and-click, it isn't monkey island...i'm hoping telltales stab at 3D is nothing like EFMI (which it isn't since its in a complete 3D evironment unlike EFMI). But just knowing I get to hear some new voice overs of my favorite pirate was enough for me to pre-order.

If it wasnt for the crappy controls and monkey combat, I think many people would agree.

That would appear to be the case :p

Well based on polls I highly doubt you are the only one with that opinion, that is up until the fourth game. Most people don't rate the first game as the best here and half of the people here think the third was the best and half of them seem to think that the second was the best. So if you think about that it means atleast half the people who can judge their favorite of the series (Meaning they played them all) feel that Monkey island two ranks below three and given other polls Monkey Island one has never been champion in the big numbers. To be honest I always loved Monkey Island EMI and I still do . There are probabaly a hand full of people here who feel the exact same way as you but they are afraid to answer up . I have seen them on polls .

im Actually 24, and i love Monkey Island 2: lechucks revenge, that 1st one i played and thats my favourite out of the series, to be honest(and i dont think some people with agree with me) but i wasnt too keen seeing Guybrush really tall and lanky in CMI, i perfer Guybrush the height he was in MI2:LR and his look aswell

too be honest i havent finished EMI,ive got both copies one on PC and other on PS2, i played on the PC one and then my computer didnt have enough memory etc, so when i played EMI on PS2 (now on both PC and PS2 i reached to Monkey Kombat) after finally finishing Monkey Kombat, i saved my game, and when i had to find a item to chuck at herman, it wasnt there, i found out it was a cliche on the game, so i would of had to start right at the beginning again, so never played it after, i might just install again on the PC

now with TOMI coming next month, i thought id play a few telltale demos, but i keep getting an error "Direct 3D required" and i have the lastest Direct X installed,i want to hopefully get it fixed before TOMI comes out

I agree, it is the worst game in the series, but the worst game in one of the best series of all time is still pretty good.

Monkey4 was IMO not the best, the best was Monkey2 THEN Monkey4. But then again, I'm pretty much the only one who liked Monkey4's controls, thinks that Monkey1SE's art direction is good, didn't find Monkey3 that amazing compared to the others and is all for the new TT controls.

For me the best is Le Chuck's Revenge. I consider TSOMI an almost perfect game. It has a magical element which makes all pieces fit together so well. The story, the graphics, the characters...

But, MI2 LCR is like the first one, but with amazing hand painted graphics, one of the best soundtracks of any video game ever, and even more crazy antics and characters. It may not be as perfect as the first, but I consider it a better game. Strange and contradictory? Yes, maybe.

COMI is an amazing game. Brilliant art direction and technically amazing. It feels quite different from the first two, but a great game.

EFMI is a very good game indeed, but it feels like a self-parody and a remake of pieces of TSOMI which don't work as well as the first one. The 3d transition wasn't really necessary or vey well made. It's a good game, but there's no doubt it's the weakest of all.

I'm pretty sure TOMI will be in some spot in the top three.
  • edited June 2009
I pretty much agree with all of you, except the ones tht rate EFMI in the top 3. For me the 1st three games where top quality and are pretty close to consider which is arguably the best.

If you think about SOMI, Lucas Arts outdid themselves with the graphics, soundtracks and the story was just awesome cuzz you couldnt wait to be a pirate, until then comes lechuck and you are on a boat. SOMI i put it in 3 but it deserves 5 stars. The graphics, soundtracks where just too good in quality, at the time when they made it.

When MI2LR came they made an even longer game, better jokes, good puzzles, still delivered graphics at the same lv of MI1. But the story brought it another level, cuzz they milked Big Whoop into something mythical. The ending is the only negative point, but the storyline was too good it just outweights the bad. Th whole return of Elaine, Lechuck was awesome too. i rank this game 2/4 and with 4.9 stars!

TCMI was even better than the 1st two, and it made me admire the team who builded this series. The 1st 2 game where so good, that you would wonder, how will the top the feat. Graphics where a BIG IMPROVEMENT, storyline was soo good, soundtrack great, great pirate atmosphere, the boat battles where something that took it another level from the 1st 2 and made a huge difference. It made you feel like a real pirate. This game for me was the best of all the 4 games released, and it deserves 5 stars.

But when EFMI comes it was bad, a whole complete nightmare and they dropped the ball big time. Graphics where AWESOME, but the rest was so bad you couldnt stand it. Puzzles where so complex it created me aversion to the game, the whole thing about looking for the prothesis was a nightmare, the clock even worst and Monkey Island was just bad, REALLY bad especially monkey kombat. The storyline was so stupid and it lacked the pirate things it needed. Murray was the only positive point, but the game made me feel like i was playing a childrens game with the silly flat jokes. i rank this game by far the worst. and i give em 1.5 Stars.

So EFMI was by far the worst and by a long time! it aint in the same league.

To be honest, I started replaying Escape a few days ago and have gave up now! :p I shot through all of it and got upto the point where the only thing left to do was Learn Monkey Kombat so I can activate the, *sigh* Giant Monkey Robot but I just really can't be bothered with that whole Monkey Kombat thing again.
  • edited June 2009
It's not completely and utterly horrifying, but it's not the best in the series.

    Some jokes I find entertaining.

EFMI is a great game! It's just not a Monkey Island game.

Mmm, If I had to rate the games it would be...

Monkey Island 2 - 9.5 it has the same score as TSOMI, but it's first because it's bigger and better.

TSOMI - 9.5 - This is simply amazing, but technically not as good as the follow up and is it just me or the boat to MI Chapter was a bit slow and boring?

COMI - 9.0 - The graphics can hardly be better! The sound is also amazing, but iMuse utilization is not as good as MI2

EFMI - 8.0 - It's the weakest, but a good game. I even liked the time travelling puzzle and even didn't find Monkey Kombat sooo terrible. I liked the graphics a lot during its time, but I don't think they would be very good if I replay it now.

It's not in the same league as the others or most other Lucasarts classic adventures, but still pretty good.

I want to love Escape. I want to at least find enough good things about it that I can at least call it an acceptable Monkey Island game. But I can't. It's just bad.

Though it seems most of the board disagrees, I'm one who thinks that Curse of MI's graphics were the best for the series. It was pretty and unique. They would've been better sticking with that. The backgrounds look good, but the characters look terrible. During close ups, they literally look like wooden figures with their features painted on. The control scheme is horrible too.

The writing was also bad. Most of the jokes do fall flat, and Guybrush and Elaine's characterisations were one of the biggest problems for me. Guybrush had lost much of his charm and wit, that made us root for him despite his akwardness. Despite the problems their relationship encountered, in previous games I really felt like Elaine loved Guybrush, but in Escape she mostly treats him as someone she just has to put up with. Part of this is probably due to the change in voice actors but also to do with the script.

Most of the new characters weren't memorable, and while the basis of the plot had potential, it ultimately became too much. The series has always had a charming number of anachronisms, but in Escape, everything became too modernized and it took me out of the setting. And then we have the continuity errors. I apperciate what they were trying to do, but it was just too much of a screwup.
I apperciate what they were trying to do, but Herman ultimately works better as a crazy hermit, not a legendary sailor. The game also takes the view that Guybrush shunk his ship in the first game, which makes sense if you want to bring back his original crew, but it doesn't explain how Hermit got back on Monkey Island, and Revenge doesn't address it either. I also hate Monkey Combat, and how you need to learn every combo, instead of just a handful. And after all that work, you can't even beat Lechuck in a fair fight. I like how they foreshadowed it during regular MC, but it wasn't satisfying.

All that said, there were some funny lines in the game, particularly on Jambalaya, and I liked the concept of the Ultimate Insult.

I'm playing through it now, just to bring myself up to speed. Forgotten that there were other things I detested more than Monkey Kombat. If I had to hear Deadeye Dave snrfing back phlegm one more time I would have shot myself... and why couldn't I ditch those useless prosthetic organs, instead of having to whirr past them looking for things I needed later?

And don't even get me started on the Mists o' Time. Miserable.
  • edited July 2009
You don't HAVE to get the other organs.
The sewer cover has the correct names listed on it if you examine it.
Not only that, but you can combine the nonessential organs, so that it's only one item instead of many.
