Game will not start on Steam

Hello, when I try to start the game through Steam, the initial "preparing to launch..." window displays for a few seconds and then disappears. From there, nothing happens. When I try to run in Admin mode, I get a warning window saying the game "failed to launch." Prior to now, I have not tried running the game, so basically it has never worked for me.

I ran the support tool, and here is the link for it.

I apologize for the delayed response. After looking over your Support Tool information, I recommend first try Verifying your Game Cache, then restart the game, and see if you are then able to start the game successfully.

If the issue persists, I noticed that your computer is currently using your integrated Intel HD graphics card instead of your NVidia graphics card. I recommend making sure that your more powerful card is enabled when starting the game, and you should not experience the issue anymore.

  • Thanks for the response Mike,
Unfortunately, I'm still having the same outcome. I messed with my NVidia settings, so I believe I have that set correctly now. I still get the "preparing to launch" window for a second or two. That window then disappears. I do notice that I briefly see "Syncing" on the left side of my Steam window, right next to where my GoT game is in the list. I have also tried numerous other methods that you had suggested to others in the support forum here, including Admin mode, Compatibility mode (for Win 98/ME), updated graphics drivers, verified game cache, deselect in game overlay and beta (in steam), and I'm still at a loss. This is the first game I've not been able to get running on my laptop.

Here's a screenshot of what I was referring too on my Steam window, where it says "syncing." On the screen, I have it circled where there word "syncing" appears: https://www.sendspace.com/file/5o631a

Thanks for your help with this. Hopefully we can fix this...

If you are still experiencing issues with the game being unable to start, please also make sure that you have disabled any anti-virus or internet firewall programs open and running that may interfere with the game from launching successfully.

If you are still experiencing the issue, you can also try disabling your Intel HD graphics card completely. You can do this by going into your Control Panel, the opening your Hardware/Device Manager. Inside your Device Manager, you should see a Display Adapters section. Open it and see if you have both your Intel and NVidia cards listed there. If so, right-click on Intel HD card, and click Disable to disable the card. This will ensure that you are using the NVidia card. (Please make sure that the NVidia card shows up there as a second display adapter. If it does not, DO NOT disable your Intel card, as you may create issues with your computer. If you do not see the NVidia card there, please first make sure that your NVidia card's drivers are updated to the latest version, then retry opening the Device Manager.)

  • Hi Mike,
Thanks for all your help so far. I tried everything you suggested, and it still didn't work. I was able to return the game through Steam. Thinking it was a Steam problem, I bought the game as a direct download through Telltale. The game will still not start. As soon as I attempt to run the game, I immediately get an error message saying "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application." I ran through all the trouble shooting options (Disable firewall/antivirus, Compatibility mode/Run as Admin, Disabled my on board graphics), and I still get the same message. Please tell me there's something I can do to get the game to run. I just want to play it...

After looking over your new Support Tool information, it doesn't seem to be identifying your NVidia graphics card still. I recommend trying the steps specified in This NVidia Webpage, and see if you are able to get the game to use your more powerful graphics card.
