Best monkey island ever!
Apart from Curse of course.
Tales of Monkey Island WAS AWESOME.

But they're off to a great start.
Think of it this way, most people - depending on when they got into the series - will say either MI 2 or Curse is the best (It's MI2 but let's move on). Those two games were so long ago that we'll always remember them fondly and as the best no matter what new game comes along.
Everyone has already agreed EMI was the worst, and that's not going to change.
So the question is really what's better SMI or ToMI. Thing is, most fans will say SMI for much the same reasons as MI 2 and Curse.
Which means
MI 2
Curse
SMI
ToMI
EMI
So Tales could never be more than the second from bottom, even though it's an amazing game, simply because the 3 that came before are so beloved and so good.
Tales has a long way to go if it wants to surpass LeChuck's Revenge. But I could see it supplanting Escape, Secret, and Curse in my heart.
It's true. The Narwhal siege puzzle was also great. The puzzle design was really good in this. I hope later episodes ramp up in difficulty a bit (I don't want old-school hard, just something to gnaw on) but in terms of quality, this was great.
Thanks Telltale!!
My list of favourite MI games is:
MI4 < MI2 < MI1 < TOMI < Curse
(Curse best MI4 worst)
I thought MI2 had some really hard puzzles that had ridiculous solutions, and most of the difficulty arose from not being able to tell what objects you needed. For example, finding Ash-2-Life and the string was a pain in the ass, and really a horrible puzzle. The ending was also really crap. Really really, inexcusably crap.
TOMI was awesome, and I know a lot of people wanted to see a Ron Gilbert Monkey Island, but he already came back to work on MI4, and look what happened there.... He's funny, but I think the MI franchise has moved on...
Still gonna get DeathSpank though.
Oh thank god did some google searching and I was wrong. I just read it on the gamespot forums awhile ago.
That's one nooby thing I'm glad I was wrong about.
By your reasoning you would rather have everyone praise the game so we can get more of the same, no matter how bad it is?
FYI Just because your mother tells you are the best and greatest doesn't make it true!
I would prefer to wait another year and pay twice as much money to have the current concerns fixed. ie.
* Better character designs
* Better control options ie. point and click
* More system options ie. Xbox, PS3 etc.
* Better inventory (2 step combine instead of 6)
* etc. etc.
My main beef with the whole game is the fact that it was targeted at Wii as a downloadable game, that right there sat the bar at a extremely low level (they probably needed a shovel to get it down there) instead of aiming high and then porting down. Monkey Island did not deserve this after waiting nearly 10 years
I'm not pointing fingers at the story or puzzles, rather the implementation
Adventures tend to be really long and there are always parts I like better in another part of another adventure.
As for the Monkey Island franchise, ToMI sure does fit perfectly in. I didn't come far (late night release in germany, also work right now) but judging from the art style, the voices (man! I forgot how much the voice actors rock!) and the humor I can put it into the shelf with the others without having to feel ashamed.
Not like other sequels... *cough*Larry*cough*
Ahh, something we most definetly agree on!
Well, just as long as TOMI keeps up to its first episode.
Even though I have a ranking, I've enjoyed every monkey island game heaps, I even enjoyed 4.
You mean, apart from MI2.
It kicks Curse's ass, no one can beat MI2. But I like it more than CMI.
Thanks for speaking on behalf of us...
IMO this is up there with Curse, a close second. I enjoyed MI2 but not nearly as much as these 2.
1) Ron never worked on MI4. The last MI game he worked for was MI2. Which I like most in the series, personal taste. Oh, I also think Curse is the worst, but still personal taste.
2) Ron co-worked for TOMI. You're liking his work too.
1. Monkey Island 2
2. Monkey Island 1
3. TMI
4. EMI
5. CMI
somi
mi2
cmi
tomi
emi
when i finish all episodes of tomi it might knock cmi off 3rd! but nothing will ever beat 1 and 2!
2. LeChuck's Revenge
3. Tales of Monkey Island
4. Secret of Monkey Island
5. ????
6. ????
7. ????
8. ????
9. ????
10. ????
Honorable mention: Escape from Monkey Island
Nothin will ever beat the beautiful 2D art and animation of Curse; however Tales is a damn fine addition to the series. I am SO glad it found a good home in TTG! Can't wait for Episode 2!
Favorite line in Tales: "Murray?"
its my number 1 because a) it was the first graphic adventure i played i admit thats probably most of the reason - it holds the best memories but b) the ending doesnt suck like mi2 and c) it has the best soundtrack like the opening theme, lechuck theme, elaine theme and the scummbar are all awesome especially the cd version. mi2s slower opening theme wasnt as good and the lechuck theme was kinda meh, the only music i really liked from mi2 was the largo theme i think!
though i will say i remember when i first saw the dream sequence at the tree house in mi2 me and my friend and my friends dad probably have never laughed so hard in our entire lives heheh.
Are you kidding me? For me the 1st and 2nd game are much better than Curse so you saing this as a fact that Curse is the best annoys me greatly.
The controls suck, yes. BUT! Who cares? It´s Monkey Island, man! No matter how.
I do prefer Curse of course, but this a close second and MI2 and 1 following.
Been playing some originals but they just don't seem as good, even though I grew up with them.
Keep up the good work Telltale!
I know I am due for a lynching, from many sides, but I always considered the writing and humor of "ESCAPE FROM MONKEY ISLAND" to be superior to its predecessors in every reasonable way. The humor was on a literary basis rather than Gilbert's easy-access, plebeian-basis and TOMI is perfectly aligned with that vein. I have LOLed 3 times in 10 minutes and I recognise the subtler humor (beyond the obvious MI references) being played here.
Like it or not ... despite anything I may have said about cost vs. game-length, I am pleased with this purchase. I am, only 10 minutes in, and extremely accelerated in my joyfulness. decided that Telltale is not an amateur production after all but a fully realised game maker.
I, (after reading these forums decided) for ONE am happy with the click+drag method of movement. Granted, it took me 5 minutes to master (I expect it will be easier when I get to some island) but this is great gameplay and it is a pleasure compared to the Wallace and Gromit style.
One caveat to that, though: I agree with Guybrush_Threepwood that the combination of items takes too many clicks. It could easily be reduced to click-item-on-other-item rather than the needlessly and theatrically "put-item-in-frame-and-put-item-in-other-frame-and-click-add. In short, whilst I applaud the final decision to make inventory an interactive experience, I truly think that it could be easier to manipulate.
But, overall, and despite the newbie, DavidE's ire, ... well done!
Thanks for making judgments based on a 1/5 of a game...
Besides just look at polls, either MI 2 or Curse always comes out on top and EMI always comes out on bottom, so yes I was actually statistically speaking correctly.
