It can't be explained because it's too stupid to make anything even slightly resembling sense.
Because with Gryff free the trade never happens, therefore the ambush never happens either. I wouldn't look too deep into what the traitor said, he was probably just trying to save his neck.
Because the trade was going to be exchanging Gryff for Ryon. Without Gryff there can't be a trade, therefore there can't be an ambush. Don't really see what makes no sense about this.
Ironically 5 minutes later an ambush happens attacking Asher. Its clear the trade would have happened because if what the traitor said was true, Ludd had no army to ambush Rodrick with anyway due to Mira.
