So what went wrong?
You said the 7th, but you only managed that date for the US... the rest of the world had to wait until the 8th!
Why no apologies or explanations?
PS - I'm LOVING the new game, btw!

That's exactly why they didn't announce a specific time, but rather just a day. And they managed to release the game on that day. They never said it would be 00:00 on the earliest possible part of the world (Australia I guess), but rather their timezone.
I for my part am happy that I can play the game now and haven't expected anything less.
We repeatedly said we were releasing it on the 7th during the day in Pacific time, and that we would try to put it out in the morning of that time but made no guarantees. We ran into some bugs with the launcher at the last minute which we obviously wanted to (and had to) fix before the game came out. I don't think anyone would have preferred we put the game out "on time" (we did that anyway) with bugs which prevented people from running the game. I don't know what to make of your post.
Glad you're loving it!
Funniest post in the thread.
Of course not, but some communication saying that the game wouldn't be ready for the majority of the planet on the date we were told would have been nice.
This was quite an important release. It's not Sam & Max: Season 3... it's a whole new Monkey Island adventure. The first in a decade! I've checked all my email from you guys and I can't find any mention that July 7th was for the US ONLY. Where was it "repeatedly" stated?
You're in an internet company. You deal with international customers. Can you imagine if a new Star Wars movie was being released worldwide... People had pre-booked their tickets, eagerly anticipating the movie, lines around the block. But when it came to the release day it turns out the date was only for people in the US... Except international theater-goers only found that out after waiting all day outside a cinema that refused to open.
A little communication would have been nice.
Gah looking back at today, I can't see how they could have done it better.
As said you are selling to a international market (i.e. not just america), systems like steam also do this and they manage to get games out at the correct time for UK markets (SF4 was out on the 7th as well, and made it on time for us people from the UK).
But the main thing I find absolutly disgusting as a paying customer is the complete lack of contact reguarding the whole process.
You KNEW you had people from the UK and around the world who had paid for this and didn't have the decency to send out a simple email or put up something on the site saying "We are sorry, we are a bit delayed the game will be up tomorrow as we make some last minute changes".
Also there is STILL no apology from you about this, in fact there is an admin post here with an excuse but the words "sorry" were not mentioned once.
If this is the level of service you give to customers from the UK then you can expect to lose lots, as quite frankly its not good enough.
Absolutely agree! If i´m not mistaken. Telltale have ALOT of international customers (like me). If Telltale released it in the morning, half of the world would have got it 7th July.
Well, nothing you can do about the problems with the launcher i guess. But some info would have been nice.
Maybe next time a countdown clock or meeting your international customers with a GMT release date or something like that would be nice. All people will flood the website about the exact minute. But it´s probobly better then to have all people F5 your website for hours and hours (like i read some people did).
You do like my "international money"...don´t you?
Around 2PM (I live in Germany so it should be the same or +-1 hour to you) there was a blogpost stating they were fixing site issues and that the game was being delayed.
Emily would have said sorry by now
Actually the blog said, "We don't want to keep you waiting, but you'll need to to bear with us for just a little while longer. All is being made ready now. It'll be worth it." That was at 9pm UK time, I believe. It also urged people to pre-order the game before it was too late.
Oh who am I kidding, I just love Telltale to much to be angry with them!
Actually they did on the blog section :-), the only one reachable. What I guess what matters made worse was that all the users waiting were bogging down the entire infrastructure :-)
this
or this
Which blog was this, I was clicking around at about this time and the blog link at the top of the site didn't take me to anything saying that, just something on the main page saying "nearly there last chance to preorder".
Oh and the person saying about expecting an american company to operate on new zealand time, no we expect a company that trades internationally, to operate on an international basis, not just an american basis.
Good answer!
What date is it? The 8th July.
Why is this? BECAUSE THEY ARE AN AMERICAN COMPANY.
I admit it would have been nice to have received it at the usual Sam 'n Max time (5pm GMT) but if it meant the difference between downloading a game with a broken launcher (which would have then caused floods of emails to their customer support) and a game that I just completed without ANY hiccups then it'll always be the latter.
I never expected it to be out by the time I went to bed last night, just because of the size of the launch.
Not to hard to tell U.S from "rest of the world" customers/bloggers. :-)
As or me. I am happy its out. And normaly i am quite content with the way TT is treating
their customers. So I can forgive them even if they dont know why i should.
The different is with steam its highly likely that by the time us brits get home from work, they will be available (in fact its likely if lucas arts are ready they will be up in the next couple of hours), compared to telltales release, which was the next day, STEAM tends to release at a time that is good to all concerned.
I totally agree but at the same time the launcher should have been sorted way before the day of release (the cynic in me could say something about copy protection updates being added causing issues) . The point I am making is there was no contact that I could see anywhere (again, didn't see anythign when i checked the blog site linked from the menu above), nothing on the main page saying sorry and explaining why, and nothing from the admin heres saying sorry, just an excuse/reason.
How do you know that the launcher wasn't affected by a last minute addition that somehow enhanced the game? Would you rather play it with or without that feature? We all know Telltale work on the game up until the last minute and I really do appreciate that as like I just said, I had absolutely no bugs whatsoever in my play through. Comapre that with some of the games I've played recently, that is a godsend!
Besides, do you see any other major company apologising when release dates get put back? No, and they can be months later.
Admittedly I've rarely had to contact TellTale's support team, but every time I have it has been a pleasure.
Telltale is not a big company I wouldn't dream of asking employees to pull 24 hour shifts just so that certain individuals can get their game at the same time as everyone else.
BUT they released it when they said they would - you have your game - everyone is enjoying it now - where is the problem??
I dont run any internet companies, but I know that if i am viewing an American website, I know I can expect their timings and release dates to be for American times and dates!
Quit waiting for an apology just because you had to wait a bit longer for the game - just be thankful it's not Duke Nukem Forever you were being promised!!!
Ungrateful? I PRE-ORDERED the game. If anything. Telltale should be grateful to me!
I really can´t understand why there are so many non-telltale emplyees defending their honour. It´s ridicilious! They are a COMPANY that wants YOUR MONEY. Just like any other company.
Just because they write snazzy stuff on their website it doesn´t make them your best friend. That is called CLEVER MARKETING! Connecting to your customers. It´s in ANY 101 maketing book out there.
Let´s see if they keep up this clever marketing and connect with ther international customers. They can do that so simple. Just adding a GMT clock or SOMETHING to show that they are AWARE of that they have international customers.
And NO...i was NOT aware of that Telltale was an american company. I don´t go on a massive research of a company before i buy a well known game.
I'm very grateful for the game, genuinely - but the comms for non-US customers have been poor. I was pretty disappointed not to get the game last night, but I'll get over it.
If you're going to take on a legendary franchise and sell it internationally, you really have to expect this. All the "It's an American company" whining is pretty lame - and to be honest the vast majority of you didn't get it until 7pm either, so I'm surprised more of you weren't slightly annoyed.
All it takes is a little more communication and for someone to send out the odd 2 line e-mail every couple of hours - that's all.
Thanks for the game though genuinely - can't wait to get home tonight and instantly get stuck :-)
Dave
It all started back in 1440, when a crazy italian dude had the idea of navigate trough out the Atlantic to get to the Indias...
Oh, sh**, it will be a long explanation to tell... Just chill out and enjoy
The one of the troubles is that there was NO MENTION WHATSOEVER of what clock they were following (in theory there is no mention of the company being american, we all just know it is. Remember lots of companies will do there business in dollars and not be based in america, and also the .com domain is for companies, not for america (as a high percentage of americans seem to think it is)), but most of us from the UK are ok with that, we accept there is delays AS LONG as we are informed of what is going on.
Again, its an american company selling on a international market, they have to act in a different manner to a company just selling to the US market.
And still I see no apology anywhere on the site.
I buy stuff all day long from various internet sites (running an internet company) and i am used to do business in euro and dollars. So that is NOT something i think about. So...No!
When you buy stuff from Japan or other countries you can buy stuff in euroes and dollars.
Everyone has a right to complain, so I'm exercising mine - thanks very much.
Enjoy your Kool Aid
ehhh....i´m not sure you are aware of this. But USA doesn´t own the .com. .com is used for ALOT of international business sites. I have a .com name and english on my site becasue i do business with people outside my own country.
Having a .com name and use english on your site isn´t enough.
You missed this how?
Yes they did (in their blog, though the post has apparently since been edited). As a British consumer I was well aware that they only stipulated a July 7th release on Pacific time, and a delay of some hours is hardly unusual or unexpected.
Surely it will always be a different date somewhere in the world?
Telltale would not have been ignoring their international market if they'd released a few hours earlier when East Asia was a day ahead, and because Europe had slipped past midnight when the game was launched still does not mean that Telltale are being ignorant of their market.
It's one of the advantages of digital distribution that they can keep on hunting for bugs until release. The game may well have been in a release ready state a few days ago (ala the review builds), but they had the luxury of making sure that there were no bugs until release. There were, and they were fixed.
