Haven't read the books, but game > show. There's not a single character I find likable in the show, at least not anymore. The show may have a better story on a grand scale, since the game only tells the story from perspective of one house. Still, as bad as season 5 was, episode 5 of the game was even worse, so yeah, both of those come really close as of now.
