What caused the Black Screen Glitch?
Now that the issue is well on its way to being resolved, I think those of us who had an unplayable version of the game for up to as long as April-July are owed an explanation. What was the cause of this game breaking bug, why did it take so long to fix, and why did Telltale give us no information or updates beyond "we're working in it" for four months?

As this particular issue was both rare and complicated, it unfortunately took longer than originally anticipated to determine a fix. Due to the nature of the issue affecting save files, we wanted to ensure that the resolution allowed players to continue using their saves, and keep from having to delete them in order to play. Unfortunately I do not have information regarding the details of what caused this issue, but thanks to all of the extra information provided by affected users, we were able to locate the issue and resolve it in a way that allowed you to be able to keep your save files. I hope that after downloading the latest patch, you are able to continue playing from where you last left off.
