Controls improvement (Not a thread to whine in)

This thread is a about how to improve the already existing control methods.

I have two things in mind.

One: Having the character run all the time and walk by holding the shift key. Or even better, having caps lock switch between walk and run. Holding shift while using the directional controls with one hand isn't that comfortable.

Two: The second mouse button isn't really used for anything. Why not have it to bring up the inventory screen?

The second button is used for running and back/skip/abort/close-type actions.

What I would love to see is this:
    1. Inverted run option (to make Guybrush run by default and walk only when the run button is pressed)
    2. Make running independent of walking (i.e. let me run around by just holding down the run button and dragging, not walk+run+drag)
    3. Make the mousewheel cycle through objects without opening the inventory

A config dialog for what button does what would be great, but I doubt that something like that is possible in the middle of the season.
    Something like

You can assign the same button to multiple actions, in which case the topmost action that is currently available will be performed.

    Menu: [Escape]
    Enable Mousewalk: Mouse1
    Enable Mouserun: Mouse2
    Action: Mouse1, [Enter]
    Up: [Up], [W]
    Down: [Down],
    Left:
    , [A]
    Right:
    , [D]
    Skip Dialog: Mouse2, [.], [Escape]

This doesn't assign all actions, but you get the idea :)

You can run with the left button if you double click before dragging. It's not as good as a walk/run switch button (which would be great) but it works pretty well.

I clicked this thread for the express purpose of suggesting these things. Most important of course is the right click inventory. Inventory is important! I want it available in an instant :)

Point and click would be nice too. Maybe I'm just too used to CMI controls, I played through that game in preparation a few days ago!

and once in the inventory, righ clicking to look at the object seems like common sense... I kept doing that before remembering the "drag to look icon" thing.

I honestly just want the controls to be handled the same way they are in Sam & Max. Regular pointing and clicking, instead of clicking and dragging.

I would love for 'Esc' to either not take you to the menu, or bring up a smaller "in-game" menu. The amount of times I pressed it to get an item out my hands or to close the inventory etc, it was quite annoying by the 100th time.

You can get the inventory with the middle mousebutton.

And I agree on the point and click point.

Not all of us have a mousewheel.

I also kept accidentally right clicking to examine items, and clicking on the ground to walk somewhere... old habits die hard :(

    Great! I don't know why I haven't even tried that :)

A simple screen explaining the controls from the main menu, or maybe a menu for allowing to change them would be appreciated.

i've just played through the first part on the ships but i have to say that i thought the camera was to close. i want a camera that's zoomed out a bit more so that i get more of a overview.

    now back to the game!

everything else starts out great btw, the humor parts started of just like it should, kudos!

If you want to make the game accessible to the console gaming crowd by instituting direct control scheme, please let us use a proper gaming controller (such as XBox 360 Controller for Windows) to control the character.

Point the mouse and then click on something.

    How hard was that?

This is not the whining thread. How hard is that to understand?

And for all suggesting about pointing and clicking:
The current controls will not go away. I do accept suggestions about pointing and clicking, but not pointing and clicking only.

Ummm why not just add the option to let me click somewhere (that isn't interactive) and have Guybrush walk to where I clicked. It's all in 3D so finding where I clicked shouldn't be dificult. Have this as an option, those who want to use the click and drag method (that I personally find frustrating), or keys can, but those who would rather "classic" controls could do that instead. Or maybe if I hold the button he could walk towards whatever the cursor is on (a barrel, a piece of floor, a three headed monkey).

Actually using the right mouse button as a walk with the click and drag method might work (my main frustration with the click and drag might be Guybrush's speed).

EDIT: (I take it back I think when I was getting used to the controls I was accidently double clicking and running everywhere, now that I'm a bit more used to them they are not too bad. It would be nice to have simple point and click as well though and use whichever feels right at the time, but then I wish people would stop treating 1600x1200 as 1600x900 with black bars, and clearly this aint going to happen.)
