Lee didn't pay attention. That's the fact. It's a simple mistake that "killed" him.

I told them we shouldn't go to St.Johns dairy. Look what happened; Mark died, because the dairy destroyed bandits came after us and Ben had to deal with them. So yeah, it's their fault.

I'm not sure how he found out it was Lee's group exactly, but I don't think he saw them .
He says something like "We came back and all our stuff was gone."
Maybe he ran across the motor inn and spotted Clem wearing the hoodie. Or he just happened to have picked up her signal on the walkie talkie and found out that way.
Yeah, that makes sense, I hate how he always found a way to make you feel bad for yourself at the end and i was wondering why he still got angry at you even if you did not want to steal from the van, and how he even knew about It so thanks.
