Episode 3 keyboard control issues (very mild spoilers)

If you're playing 'The Walking Dead: Season Two' and have started playing Episode 3, especially if you're playing on a PC, please read this post...

For the most part, I've not had any complaints about the control scheme in Telltale Games' 'Walking Dead' games. I don't know that a PC with a keyboard/mouse is maybe the best way to play them, because there are some moments where the on-screen control indicators just don't make any sense. But I've worked past them and figured it out eventually.

Until today, that is...

(mild spoilers follow for 'The Walking Dead: Season Two - Episode 3', but they're very, very mild)

So I'm all excited to play my freshly-downloaded copy of the long-anticipated third episode for the game, just released today. I started playing this morning after work. I'm getting back into the story and the characters; generally having a good time.

But I get to the scene (early in the episode, from what I can tell regarding its length) where Clem takes some nails over to Kenny and Mike in the storefront adjacent to Carver's "compound". They start to argue, and in this game (as in the show and probably the graphic novels, I'm sure)--when people start fighting amongst themselves and not paying attention? That's when walkers show up.

So unsurprisingly, walkers start breaking through the windows of the store front. Clem grabs a 2"x4" and tries to bash one's head in, with no luck. This is where the whole wall-punching, curse-muttering ball of frustration begins.

The on-screen control indicator tells you to slide to your left (the character's right) to escape from the walker behind a collapsed store shelf. Okay, no problem.

Then the on-screen control indicator tells you to "HOLD A TO ESCAPE". Except no matter how many times I try this, the walker catches up to me. Clem is zombie-food and I'm starting back at the (thankfully only a few seconds earlier) save point.

I've tried it both ways, and pretty much every conceivable combination of the two: Wait until right when it says "HOLD A TO ESCAPE" to start pressing the "A" key. Press "A", but keep hammering it rather than holding it down constantly. Either way, I get eaten. Repeatedly pressing "A" rather than holding it down seems to allow me to scoot further along the wall away from the walker than just holding "A"...but eventually I still get caught.

Is anyone else playing the PC version of the game, and if so how did you deal with this encounter? I'm not one for full walk-throughs or cheats...but in this case, I'm doing exactly what it says I should be doing and I just can't win. I've probably played through the seen 30 or 40 times at his point.

I briefly watched on video walk-through of the episode on YouTube (I skipped through to the scene I'm talking about and then stopped watching). The guy doing the walk-through seemed to have the same problem I did the first time (Clem gets eaten and he exclaims "But I held it!", referring to the "A" key), but his second attempt was successful.

I don't want to take a break from a game that I've waited on for months because I'm so frustrated, but I also don't believe in letting games push me to the point where I want to break things--especially not when those things include my brand new $100 keyboard.

  • I had problems there as well. I'm playing on a lap top. I finally got through by holding down the "a" key and tapped the up arrow key ( or was it the down arrow, I forgot already.) all the way through. Hope this helps.

Try holding A and S, or A and W. Usually I try to follow the general direction the character needs to go. She seems to be going left and up/down at an angled view.
  • well, i use a keyboard as well, but i didn't got that problem, i got a little confuse in that part and pressed "w" istead of "a", then i immediately pressed "a" and got away whithout a problem
  • Same thing happened with me. I just recently started playing on the PC but this hadn't happened to me before. It took me 4 times to finally get it.

First time I was too slow, second time I tried to hold A down the whole time and she died, third time I forgot about the left arrow key oops. Finally, I tapped and held A after it told me to hold it down. somehow it worked but every couple of seconds Clem would stop and I'd have to let go and hold A down again. So that seemed to work with me. If you're still having trouble, maybe try that or what the others said.

Also, it might just be my laptop but for some reason I get pixelated shadows (everything else is fine except the shadows look like the shadows of legos) and sometimes when there's a scene, the characters have a defined blur around them which is weird. Idk does this happen to you too?
  • I also had this problem. It was extremely frustrating. I did what JonGon did.
  • I don't know man, i play on pc with a xbox controller, everything went normal in that scene. I guess it's the keyboard's fault but that makes no sense.

Try pressing S (the direction she is facing.)
  • hold a in until she stops, then let go and hold it in again. That's how I got it to work
  • ArcticWinter's suggestion worked. I should've known it would be something that simple--I tried just about everything else BUT that.

    Thanks everyone!
