What Comes After Interactive Story [Update: Version 2.3 Released]

edited May 2014 in The Walking Dead

For those who don't know, a while back, I created a Walking Dead Fan-Fic called "What Comes After"(Link: http://www.telltalegames.com/community/discussion/60116/what-comes-aftera-walking-dead-fan-fic). Since it started in late February, it's gotten fairly popular, and spawned some pretty interesting stories about what happened to Macon and the surrounding area after the first Season of the game.

However, it is a bit... Messy. With everyone having their own story lines in mind and those story lines sometimes crossing over or interrupting each other, it can lead to some not so smooth moments in the narrative. Other times, it's really cool and leads to something that no one expected.

But still, I thought it would be interesting to have a story written by a singular person running along side the collaborative one just to see how things differ. However, I still wanted to make the story at least somewhat based in the community.

That leads us to a wonderful program called Twine, which allows you to create interactive narratives with branching paths and variables in the story. Since it would be a different story, I felt it should have a different thread, so here we are.

It will be released in episodes, or perhaps split up into chapters if the episodes become to long.

For those who know the Fan-Fic, perhaps what characters you'd like to see in different roles, changes to the story you think would be good, interesting choices... Anything really.

    • Molly
    • Anna Correa

  • Writing this story has been quite fun, but coding all the choices has been a pain in the ass.

That being said, I'm getting to some real choices here! Once the different paths that I'm working on have been fleshed out a little bit better, I'll upload the second preview.

  • Hello, just wanted to leave a quick suggestion as I also write interactive fiction/stories.

Anyways, just wanted to suggest using Inklewriter. It automatically generates a map for you when writing so you can see the paths. Plus you can use variables and it's very easy to use for people who've never programmed before. One great thing is that as you're making choices, it unfolds like a book. So, you can read the story from the beginning with all of your choices intact without starting over. It means you can basically read your narrative again as a normal book.

You could also try choicescript as well, used for the choice of games apps/stories. It does require you to code, but it's easy once you get the hang of it. I learned it in a day or two and I'm not a programmer. But again, Inklewriter would probably best for you. (If you ever decide to try and sell any interactive stories, Inkle will turn your story into an ebook for you though you'll need to provide the cover for you to upload, for the small sum of £5, I think. They said they'll preserve all of the variables and such. Also, choice of games will publish people's stories under the hosted games label.)

Hope this helps anyway, as I found Inklewriter much better than twine.

  • That's interesting, thank you. for now, I think i'm going to stick with Twine as I've invested in learning it a bit, but i'll be sure to check out this Inklewriter in the future.

Version 2.2 is up, I've added the Anna conversation and the lead in to the next part of the "camp" path.

I'm also removing all the non working links, which are anything older than 2.1

  • Just though I'd pop in to confirm that yes, not much actual work has been done in the past month. My bad.

However, I've been furiously planning things and taking notes, so when I do get back to work, it will hopefully be at a much faster pace now that a lot of specifics are down on paper.
  • Cool, looking forward to it! :)

Er... Well, might take a bit longer even than it already has. Not much work will be done on it the whole of this month.

    But thanks for the support.

  • Very small update, only a bit more into the Cabin branch is all: http://www.philome.la/Zyphon44/what-comes-afterv23

  • Well, I fucked up all the code in the new area big time. It will take a while to fix it all...
