Walking Dead season 1 black screen
Hello, I have wanted to re play the Walking Dead once more, and I completed episode one just fine, but after that every other episode is just a black screen that never loads. The program continues to run with no crash or anything its just locked until I end the process. It asks if I want to restart from a checkpoint and even if I manually go back to the beginning of the episode it does the black screen "freeze" again. Any fixes for this game breaking bug?
http://www.sendspace.com/file/3kiuyu there is my walking dead support tool dx diag or whatever it is.

I apologize for the inconvenience. It looks as if you have two prefs.prop files, which could cause this issue. Please go to G:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\the walking dead\Pack\default and move the prefs.prop file to your desktop.
Please then try launching The Walking Dead again, and when you launch any of the episodes, they should no longer be a black screen. If this does fix the issue, and the saves that are present in the game are correct, you can delete the prefs.prop file from your desktop.
I don't even know if this discussion is open anymore or if I will get a reply, but I am having the same problem. I reinstalled my operating system but made sure to save all of my Telltale saves beforehand (I also have TWD Season 2 and The Wolf Among Us; I haven't tried to play those two games since the OS reinstall). I copied my TWD1 saves to the folder and assumed it would work (rookie mistake, I know I did something wrong :I) but I'm just getting the blank screen when I try to open a save. I can't even use the rewind option to go back to the beginning of the episode--episode 4 if that even matters. I tried to look for the prefs.prop folder but could only find one between the two Walking Dead folders (my old one and my new one; it was in the old one) and put it on desktop. Didn't work. I tried verifying game cache--didn't work. Restart my computer--didn't work. Back up save files, why not give it a try?--didn't work either. I would rather not completely restart the game if that's possible. Any help would be very much appreciated, thank you very much.
Please see this forum post (https://www.telltalegames.com/community/discussion/44150), and install and run the support tool. Please read the instructions for your platform, and after you have run the tool please upload the file and provide the link to the file in your reply. Please note: It may take several minutes for the tool to run and complete.
I really hope that you can fix my black screen problem as well. I would appreciate it very much.

Thanks.
My apologies. Please rename the prefs.prop file in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack\WalkingDead103
to prefs.prop.bak to disable it, then restart the game, and your saves should be restored.
I'm having this same issue, I went ahead and used that support tool and uploaded the file here: https://www.sendspace.com/file/izwk6d
I seem to be having this issue every time I try and play Episode 5 now. It was fine until I tried to play Season 2 and realized that it showed that Episode 4 was the last completed episode for Season 1 but that wasn't right. So I went back to Season 1, and saw no stats for Episode 5 at all but there were stats for 400 Days (which I found odd). I tried rewinding but that did nothing so I ended up deleting the file and just starting over but now every time I try to just play Episode 5 I get a black screen. Please help me here.
I apologize for the inconvenience. Please rename the prefs.prop file in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack\WalkingDead105
to prefs.prop.bak to disable it, then restart the game, and your saves should be restored.
I'm having a similar issue. i never get past the loading screen. even though the sound and game works, the picture freeze, but the rest works. please help.

@sergamar I apologize for the inconvenience. I noticed you have a Gigabyte technology computer. There are known issues with some Gigabyte motherboards that prevented multiple games from running. You may need to update your BIOS which you can do at Gigabyte's website.
It's also possible this is an audio issue. Please try unplugging all speakers and mics. Then make sure you have headphones plugged into the audio jack on your computer.
Lastly, you may need to install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8328
Please try starting the game again, and when you get stuck at the black screen, try switching the game to Windowed Mode using the Windows shortcut (Alt+Enter) and see if you are then able to see the game. If you are, and you wish to play in Full Screen mode, please try switching the resolution and graphics settings to a lower setting, hit Apply, and then press the same Windows shortcut to switch back to Full Screen mode.
it works when i try it in window mode, but the screen freeze every time i try full screen, even when i try switching the resolution and graphics to a lower setting. any thing else that might help?
I updated the BIOS, and now i can play windowed, but if i change it to fullscreen, all turns black. I also did the other two things. How can i play fullscreen?
I recommend trying a lower setting than you have currently set it to. If you have set it to the lowest setting, and you are still unable to play in full screen mode, I am out of potential solutions, and recommend that you play in the mode that is working for you.
If you have tried all resolution and graphics settings in full screen mode, and none of them work, you may need to play in Windowed Mode. I apologize for any difficulties this may cause you.
I just played through season 1 for the second time and completed episode 4. After the ending credits to epsiode4 it goes to the home screen. I play to continue on to episode 5 and it loads into the episode select screen. When I choose to play episode 5 all I hear is music and see a mouse pointer but nothing else happens (black screen). I have restarted the game and even rewinded episode 4 and allowed to complete 4 again, but still same issue when I get to episode 5. It goes into music but I don't get the "Last time on walking dead" if that is of any help.

You're welcome, I hope that you are now able to enjoy the game!
I apologize for the inconvenience. Please rename the prefs.prop file in

If this discussion is still active, I'm having a problem with a black screen too. I downloaded all episodes of TWD season 1 to Steam on my Mac a few months ago and it has been working fine, no complaints. I have played through a few times more since then and recently I haven't been able to play Episode 4. Where there should be a "loading" screen there is only a black screen with a cursor. I have given it time just in case it was loading without me knowing, but nothing happens. Whether I start a new game or rewind through a previously completed game, I always get a black screen when I get to Episode 4. Here is the link to the file created from the Support Tool:

Maybe I have to get rid of the prefs.prop files, but I don't know which ones. Help would be greatly appreciated!
I have the exact same problem, posted a question about it but no reply yet. I hope we get some help soon.
Only thing is this is my first time playing through and mine's on PC not Mac.

@noslipgrip89 Please rename the prefs.prop files in
/Users/YOURNAMEHERE/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/The Walking Dead/TheWalkingDead.app/Contents/Resources/Pack/WalkingDead104/
and
/Users/YOURNAMEHERE/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/The Walking Dead/TheWalkingDead.app/Contents/Resources/Pack/WalkingDead102/
to prefs.prop.bak to disable them. Then restart the game, and your saves should be restored.
@Noinin My apologies. I do not see any extra prefs.prop files in your file structure that may be causing this. Can you please clarify if you are seeing the black screen when starting the game, or when you are in-game, choosing to continue your save file? I recommend that you update the drivers of your graphics card to the latest version, and then restart the game, and see if your issue is resolved.
Works fine now. Many thanks!
Thanks for the reply. It happens when I choose the chapter and press play and then instead of loading my save it goes to the black screen.
I recommend that you update the drivers of your graphics card to the latest version
Could you please explain that to me? I'm not a computer person sorry. How would I go doing that, is it something I need to buy from a shop?
You're welcome, I hope you enjoy the game!
Please check out This Article on Intel's page on how to update your drivers.
It's not going to work because a customized driver is installed on my computer or something. I'm so disappointed, I was really enjoying this game
I apologize for the inconvenience. You may also have received an incomplete, or corrupted download file for Episode 5. I recommend you delete the episode, and re-download it. To do this, please open the following file directory:
C:\Users\%Username%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Wolf Among Us\SyncFs\
In there, you will find the Data, Meta, and Temp folders. Open the Data folder, and delete the Fables105 folder. Then inside the Meta folder, delete the Fables105.json file. Then restart the game, and re-download the episode. (Please also make sure that you have disabled any anti-virus or internet firewall programs open and running that may interfere with the download completing successfully. Then restart the game, and restart the Episode, and the issue should be resolved.
It's not your fault, thank you so much for trying to help me. Sorry I must have mucked up somewhere because it's the Walking Dead that isn't working. I haven't even started playing Wolf Among Us yet
EDIT: I was up to the chapter "Around Every Corner" and I was near the end of it I think. Last time I played I was in Crawford, helping to find medicine.
Apologies for my confusion. Can you please clarify if you've ever moved or altered any of the game's files?
No not at all
I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. It sounds like your save file may have become corrupted. This can happen if you close/exit the game during an autosave or loading sequence. I recommend changing to a different save slot, and see if you are able to start the episode 'Around Every Corner' successfully. If you can, then it is not an issue with your episode download, and your save file is most likely corrupted. I would then recommend starting a new game. Again, my apologies for any difficulties this may cause you.
Aww damn that sucks. Yeah I've already tried a different slot and that didn't work either. Such a shame I have to start again but oh well not much you can do
Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it!
You're welcome, I apologize I could not assist you further. I hope you are able to enjoy the game!
Hi, getting the axe black screen when continuing my S1 ep2 game. Here is my diag info link:

This should be the right thread!
Hello, I'm having the "black screen of un-death" problem like everyone above me.
I finished episode 4 and was about to start episode 5 but when hit "play" in the episode selection the screen goes black and soon the cursor disappear. Then nothing happens.
I read I had to delete/rename the prefs.prop in the telltale directory in documents and in the steam directory. But there was no prefs in the steam sub-folders!
I reinstalled it, done a cache integrity test but nothing happens!
I can play any episode, even 400 days, without a problem but it seems I just can't even start episode 5!
Here's the support tool file: https://www.sendspace.com/file/4w2lgd
Thanks in advance for your help!
