Walking Dead zombies: created by mad science or magic?

Ok, I know it doesn't really matter and, at this point, it's pretty clear to me the zombies are supernatural in nature. But I'm curious if there are those who still think it's a virus and how come.

I haven't read the comics in several yeas so I don't know if this has already been answered.

  • Plottwist! It's actually like the truman show all the zombies and survivors are just actors and the only one who doesn't know is Clementine.

  • Only explanation which has ever been given is that it's some sort of pathogen which turns people into walkers.

  • Twist: Clementine is actually a zombie in disguise, and the zombies are just really dirty humans.

  • To answer your question, no. This has not been answered.

Robert Kirkman has stated he doesn't want to explain, because that's not his vision. If he started going on about what caused it, he feels that it would start going into science-fiction territory. And he doesn't want Walking Dead to become science-fiction. He just wanted it to be about average people put into a fucked up situation, and see how they react and deal with the situation.

    But my guess? Aliens.

  • I think there was scientific disaster in Savannah. It involved either rats or bugs and they somehow were set free. Whether by an evil guy or by accident is unknown. Then people got infected shortly after...

  • The post apocalypse is a sci-fi staple. But I get what Kirkman was trying to say and I agree with leaving the cause up in the air. Hell, finding the cure for the plague was a running plot in Y The Last Man, but Vaughan still refused to explain what ultimately cause his particular apocalypse and I'm glad.

Aliens is one science-y explanation I haven't considered much and I can actually buy it.
