Why the Russians?

Don't the Russians from the end of S204 seem a little random? How often do you run into a group of native Ruskies in the middle of rural Tennessee?

Besides, isn't the whole "evil Russian" thing a little overdone at this point? This isn't "James Bond" or "Rocky and Bullwinkle"...

At least the villain from S105 had a connection to past actions--these guys are introduced within the scope of a single episode. Very strange.

  • No? They had a set-up we found Arvo, and it made sense for him to have a group especially with his disability.

  • It seems a bit uninspired, but I also don't think they're going to turn out to be bad people necessarily going by the translation of their dialogue at the end of episode 4.

  • there should have been a choice to give up your guns to the russians at the end of the episode, but I dont think a little girl making a choice like that for the whole group makes a lot of sense.

  • Why not? There are all kinds of ethnicities in the USA, including Russian Americans.

  • It's not hate. Russians just seem to be frequent antagonists in games/movies/tv shows. They're overused, especially as villains, and in this particular instance it seems very strange that there would be a group of non english speaking russians in Tennessee

  • This is the american propaganda.Always the russians are the bad guys.

  • Who says that they can't speak English? There's always the possibility that they spoke Russian because they didn't want to reveal to the Clem's group what they were saying to each other. It's a tactical advantage in hostile situations and they had chosen Arvo as their spokesman with the Clem's group.

  • That would explain why their Russian was so terrible.

  • Don't worry I have been written in the show to save the group from this sticky situation.

Because they said in the translation "Arvo, what are they saying?" in Russian. Why would they possibly say that if they know english?

  • Apache you know bow and arrow.

    Indians? From India?

  • I don't understand the point you're trying to make then.

  • i bet if they were black and someone made a thread saying "Why the blacks?" it would probably get downvoted instantly, who cares if they are russians? And they might not even be villans they are most likely just as scared as Clem's group.

  • Well yeah, I found it a bit strange and ridiculous too. I hope in ep 5 we'll get some explanation about what a Russian group is doing in America. But jeez, it's clearly another "evil Russians" type of plot. Telltale must have been getting inspiration from CoD games.

  • I don't speak Russian, so I have no idea what they said. So, I can't really comment their sayings to one way or another.

  • I don't speak Russian either. However the dialogue has been translated, and it's pretty clear that they don't actually speak English, or at least they dont speak it very well.

  • At least there wasnt a hunger games quote. "You need to know who the real enemy is"

  • I have seen some very bad translations in the past and it's my opinion that if you don't speak the language, you can never be certain about the quality of translation (Unless it's official translation of course. In this particular case TTG certainly knows what the Russians were saying). Therefore I refrain from commenting what the Russians said, because I can't verify what they said with 100% certainty.

Apocalipse happened fast and suddenly, there were families torn apart and lots of destroyed lifes. Just yesterday I saw a group of Asian guys next to my house, and no, I ain't Asian myself. Do not tell me you've never seen a foreigner in your city. Russian or not, there are just people.

  • I am so comfortable and glad cyka blyat wasn't said..so glad..

  • It's not really a loss, because making statements without being able to verify the facts is worse alternative than not commenting at all.

I am Russian, and I a totally agree with OP. First of all, their phrases clearly indicate, that they don't speak nor understand English - like, Buriko asking Arvo "Что они говорят?" - "What are they saying?" . I've could have probbaly expalined group of Russians in USA as, like, for example, they were in transit flight at the airport, when ZA had happened, but my personal issue with them is that Buriko, Maud and Arvo are NOT Russian names (Vitalii is) - these names are Estonian or Finnish (and may be, Swedish), but definitely not Russian. It's like meeting group of French-speaking people named Jiang, Xiang and Lei in Argentina.

    Well, that's your loss.

  • I thought Clem was in North Carolina... But yeah Russian is the default bad guy language. But at least every single bad guy isn't Russian like a certain game (cough cough Call of Duty cough cough)

  • The idea that a group of non-English speaking Russians is hanging out in rural Tennessee is pretty fucking ridiculous. Telltale obviously didn't think this through very much...I'm sure they added them in because it sounded like a "cool or edgy" idea.

Many Estonians can speak Russian thanks to Soviet education system they had and country still has large Russian minority. Also some people of Estonian origin still live in Russia. Buriko could be surname. And Maud could be non-Russian who is married or in relationship with a Russian man.

There's the possibility that they are relatively recent immigrants which would explain why they don't speak English well (Arvo's English was rather bad). I know that there are plenty of immigrants in the USA who can barely speak English.

Naturally all of this is just idle speculation, because we don't know the facts till the Episode 5 is out.

  • In one translation I read the girl (Maud) was telling everyone to put down their guns and told Bonnie to stop pointing it at her because she was afraid they were all going to get killed, I'm pretty sure if she could speak English she would have told the group she was facing off against something like that in English instead of a language they wouldn't understand.

  • First, telltale wanted to bring Eddie back in se2 ep 4 but they have created these stereotipycal russians...It would have been much more interesting for me if Eddie joined a group of bandits and started robbing people,he and his gang would have been a much better antagonists than Arvo and "evil russians"

  • I can understand the dramatic potential of language barriers, but if that was the case then the foreign group could easily have been Hispanic. Just like the Latino man who Roman captures in 400 Days.

Perhaps they chose Russians because of the assumption that they as a people are much more acclimatized to living in the cold. Since Episode 5 will be centered around surviving in the dead of winter, I'm guessing we'll see more of the Russians later on. I also hope this means Arvo lives on a little longer - the fact that he's been taken care of by his group makes me think they're more than simple bandits...

Buricko knows some of English words. When they were about to shoot, he said (I believe to Kenny or Mike) "You! Gun. Down.", according to game files.
