Was I the only one who felt that an "I love you" was necessary at the end of Season One?

I personally felt that at the end of Season One there should have been a dialogue option for Lee to say "I love you" to Clementine before he died. It would have fit the emotional scenes tone very nicely and I feel that it would have just been nice to know that Clementine knew just how much she meant to our character.

I'm not suggesting that the end was lacking or that we really did leave Clem in any doubt about whether we cared but even so... I don't know, I'd have just appreciated the option being there.

I also wonder why it wasn't included. Were the writers concerned that it could somehow be conceived as weird or something?

  • Well, saying it is one thing. But Lee showed by his actions his love for Clem as a daughter.

I definitely don't think an 'I love you' option would have been weird, that's for sure. Clem and Lee went through hell together and expressed compassion for each other in many different ways. Lee essentially became an adopted parent or step-dad to Clementine, and they loved each other as such.

I also don't think an 'I love you' option was necessary, though. It's obvious Lee loved her... Clem knew that... But instead saying 'I miss you' showed regret that he'd never be able to see her again.

  • I don't see why some people would find Lee saying I love you to Clementine kind of creepy, it's only if you think of it that way.

Yes, I agree totally. The entirety of Season One has a timespan of almost a year. That is a long time to bond with someone, especially when you've taken on the role of a parent to that person.

  • Eh I don't know it would seem kinda cheesey IMO. "Don't be afraid" is my favorite

  • It was actually just three months, but the point stands. Lee effectively became her father once the zombies arose.

  • The 'I'll miss you' option already turns the game's feels into a fist that punches me in the emotional stomach every time I pick it, so an 'I love you' option would make me cease to function.

  • It would have been completely acceptable with the level on companionship the two shared. But it would have been extremely unoriginal and frankly, boring. I prefer the direction they went.

  • Yeah, me too. But in a way, I'd kind of want that.

  • Three months? Are you sure? Because I thought that there was a three month gap between Episode One and Episode Two alone (during which time we meet Mark). Furthermore, it's been said that the whole of the Walking Dead game has a span of almost three years (further into the apocalypse than even the comics got) and I thought Season Two only jumps two years and not almost three.

Anyway, sorry if this is going off subject.

  • There was a three-month gap between the first two episodes, but the subsequent time lapses were nowhere as long. Approximately a week passed between episode 2 and 3, then episode 4 took place over a couple of days, and episode 5 took place in one day. Then Clem spent several months with Christa before Omid died.

It doesn't really matter if Lee spent even just a week with Clem. He was the first person to take care of her and teach her how to survive, and that's what allows her to remember him years later.

  • Lee's actions speaks louder than words.

  • Oh, of course. Yes, I'd forgotten about the offscreen months with Christa. Sorry! But yes, you're right. Clementine and Lee just seemed to bond immediately.

  • Something tells me that if there was an I Love You option, Clee creeps would outnumber the Cluke peeps.

  • I think after when you choose for Lee to say, "I miss you" It should have had both Clem and Lee holding eachothers hand with visible tear drops landing on the floor next to it. Was disappointed when I found out that if you left Lee to turn she only then will grab Lee's hand.

  • You know what I wanted the most? When you're leaving Lee to turn, I wanted to see Clem hugging Lee one last time instead of holding his hand.

Even if Lee did care for her like a daughter, that would be kinda fast to love somebody in 3-4 months don't you think?

  • I honestly prefer "I'll miss you." Just the general tone of the game, "I Love You" would just feel almost too sweet, and it really just wouldn't seem right. "I Love You" was just so expected, "I'll Miss You" was basically getting punched in the face, and to me it made the scene more emotional.

  • Some people are saying it would be creepy if Lee said it, but what if you said "I'll miss you" for Clem to reply "I love you".

  • After Lee gives his last advice to Clem, he says 'and also...' but passes out for a second, dismisses in a haze and then we have the option for 'I'll miss you' etc. I always interpreted it as he was trying to say 'I love you' but the infection was grabbing such a hold, he wasn't able to say in his last moments. :( I was expecting him to say it when I first played the finale, so the fact he didn't made it extra emotional.

  • In normal life, probably. But in ZA I think time doesn't matters that much. It's different.

  • Some of the people who would be creeped out by Lee saying 'I love you' to Clem creep me out. She's been his surrogate daughter for months. Have we really reached such an absurd level of paranoia about pedophiles nowadays that even a blatantly obvious expression of paternal love would be interpreted the wrong way? Would you be creeped out by a stepfather expressing love for his stepdaughter, or a parent expressing love for an adopted child?

Still, I agree 'I love you' alone would have felt out of place. I'd have preferred something more along the lines of letting her know she was like the daughter he never had and how proud of her he was.

Very well said! That ridiculous paranoia truly has gone too far. I've even been accused of pedophilia because I happen to have a lot of Clem screenshots on my Steam profile, but obviously that's because I adore the character and despite her being fictional, she almost feels like my own adopted daughter. I was... Well... Completely baffled by that accusation.

  • I agree, he didn't need to say it. He showed it when he risked everything to find her. She knew how much he cared I have no doubt.

  • I dont think so. It depends on the relationship. Don't parents love their children almost instantly?

  • are you saying its creepy for a man to say "i love you" to his adopted daughter?

because thats pretty much what clem was to lee

  • "I miss you" was the best response I feel. Felt sad just picking it.

  • Well yeah but it's THEIR children. Lee found Clem, a random human child that he just stumbled upon while searching for help.

  • And he "adopted" her just like an adoptive family learns to love their child like they came from their own body.

  • I know Lee showed how much he loved Clem in the game, but still, I wish we could have heard that from him. Still, the "I miss you" choice seems like a "light" version of it and it's emotional as hell as well.
