  • Thanks for replying but that didn't work. Renamed it, restarted, continued ep2 and black screen with crickets sound and axe icon.

Please rename the prefs.prop file in \Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack\default to prefs.prop.bak to disable it, then restart the game and your save files should be restored.

My apologies. That should have resolved the issue. Can you please clarify if you have a backup folder with save files on your computer as well? I recommend doing a search on your computer for 'prefs.prop' and see if you have any others. Please also rename them to prefs.prop, and then restart the game.

  • I've had to replay ep1 about 3 times now trying to get past the ep2 crash. I have not played through even ep2 yet. So I have my prefs.prop in my docs named correctly and renamed prefs.prop.bak in my steam/default folder. Launched game and continue to same axe screen. :(

Unfortunately, if this does not resolve your issue, then your prefs file has most likely been corrupted. This is rare, but can happen if the save is compromised (for example, if the game crashes during an autosave, or if the game is closed using Task Manager). If this is the case, then the corrupted prefs can no longer be used and should be removed from your computer to prevent any further complications. I apologize for any difficulties this may cause you.

Yes, you will need to delete all of the files within your

    C:\Users\%Username%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\ file directory,

and then restart the game while connected to the internet, and you should not experience the issue again. Please also make sure to turn off Steam Cloud Saving for the game from within Steam, as we do not recommend playing with it enabled. (You can check this by right clicking on the game in your Steam library, clicking properties, and click the updates tab. Near the bottom of the page, you can see if the Steam cloud is enabled for The Walking Dead: Season 1. If it's enabled, please disable it.)

  • I've been having this problem. So I played it for the first time a few weeks ago. I got past episodes 1 and 2, but then three was running really slow. So, I closed out and went back in. Only when I tried to play it it asked if I'd like to generate random decisions for skipped episodes. Then if I went to two it asked if I'd like to rewind to this episode. Then when I pressed continue it just gave me a black screen, but I could move the arrow around. So I scrapped this game and started over, only to find it is doing the same thing but this time after I finished episode one. Please help! Here's the file or whatever you call it: https://www.sendspace.com/file/zk9n05

After looking over your Support Tool information, it seems that your computer is running below the minimum system requirements to run the game successfully. Where we require a minimum of 512mb of dedicated memory, your computer is currently running at 32mb of dedicated memory. Your computer uses an integrated Intel graphics card, which we do not recommend using for our game, as they tend to run under minimum specs. I recommend either trying to update your current graphics card's drivers to the latest version, and see if you are able to play, or try playing the game on a computer above minimum system requirements if you have the ability to.

You can also try changing the game's resolution and graphics settings to a lower setting, from inside the Options Menu, and then continue the episode, and see if your issue is resolved.

@Dragonedge I apologize for the inconvenience. Please try starting the game again, and when you see the blank/black screen, please try switching the game to Windowed Mode using the shortcut (Alt+Enter for PC) and see if you are then able to see the game correctly. If so, please then try changing the game's resolution and graphics settings to a lower setting, and click Apply. Then try switching back to Full Screen Mode by using the same shortcut, and your issue should then be resolved.

  • I have disabled Steam Cloud right when the problems started (I read you advise to don't run the game with it).

My saves and preferences are disappeared, to activate them back all I have to do is to rename back the prefs.prop file in
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack\default

But the real problem is, no matter what, chapter 5 just doesn't start. Even if I do a fresh start, with skipped decision from the previous episodes, when I hit "play" in chapter 5 selection the screen goes black, the mouse arrow disappear and everything stays just like that.

I did try to reinstall it and delete all the steam cloud saves, but chapter 5 just doesn't start :\
I'm even willing to replay the whole game but... what's the point if I can't get to the final chapter?

If this discussion is still active, I'm having a problem with a black screen too. I downloaded all episodes of TWD season 1 to Steam on my PC a few months ago and it has been working fine, no complaints. I have played through a few times more since then and recently I haven't been able to play Episode 2. Where there should be a "loading" screen there is only a black screen with a cursor. I have given it time just in case it was loading without me knowing, but nothing happens. Whether I start a new game or rewind through a previously completed game, I always get a black screen when I get to Episode 2.
