Luke's Purpose In The Final Choice (SPOILERS FOR 205)!!!
It's all finally setting in.
'Amid The Ruins', Luke.
'When I look at Kenny now, he seems broken. And broken people get reckless.. He's taken more than he can handle'
'She (Jane) really lays it on the line, but she doesn't show you anything that counts... Jane seems like the kind of person that gets tempered by hardship.
Luke could never ever be a choice in the Kenny/Jane choice. It was set out from the start, Luke was never the deutergonist, he was, as mentioned many times by the developers, Clementine's compass.** Luke had laid out the choices an episode before.** He saw them for their flaws, and recognised a choice coming.
A lot of us are sore about his death, a little cold (sorry) about it, but it was part of the narrative. Luke usually pointed Clem in the right direction, but the final choice had to be hers, OURS. My Clementine.
Comments
They'll just have to deal with it.
I think it was suppose to be luke v Kenny
but ttg didn't want to be predictable..
I think it was supposed to be set up Luke v. Kenny
but then they realized how incredibly one sided it would've been.
Just because Luke was Clementine's compass, doesn't mean he wasn't the deuteragonist. Clementine was technically Lee's moral compass, and she was the deuteragonist for season 1, so if anything that makes me think Luke was more of the deuteragonist this season, they just decided to kill off the deuteragonist this season rather than the protagonist. Curse you Telltale!
But nice catch that Luke figured it out before any of us did. I think they just planned from the start to fake us out by thinking there'd be a Luke or Kenny choice, and to set Luke up as this guy we all thought Clem would "walk off into the sunset with", when really he was destined to die in the end, not that I'm happy about it, but it makes sense from a storytelling standpoint. He really was just there to point Clem in the right direction, but in the end the story is Clem's alone.
Luke keeps accidentally figuring things out for us.
First there's Kenny. After seeing the amid the ruins trailer we kinda hated him for possibly suggesting to leave Kenny. And what happens, he snaps. And turns out he never suggested leaving him.
Then mike, that comment he made about him. We also slightly hated him, and he ended up being right.
Then jane, she lays it on the line, yes. But we all knew she wasn't loyal, thus the "but she doesn't show you anything that counts."
;___;
Kinda dark in retrospect, considering how 'they' were all killed off.
Deal with it? More like Clementine or them. Survival of the fittest at its best.
In my opinion, a Luke v. Kenny choice would've been much harder. I mean, damn the Luke v. Kenny choice in EP. 2 was the only choice I ever had to pause on. Not because it was a difficult situation, just a hard choice between two characters whom really cared for our Clem and whom I really cared about.
That's a great find though, Luke was the best new character in Season 2 IMO.
However, I think a lot more people would've chosen Luke. Not because they hated Kenny but because they liked Luke better and saw him with more potential. I know I would've chosen Luke in the ending if it had actually happened.
Yeah, I guess he still is the deteuragonist this season. There were just a lot of folks (as usual) on here who thought Luke was in the end, unnecessary. He was Clementine's guide to the adults. Dammit telltale, it's always gotta be one. If A and Clem are the team next season, they BOTH better make it out alive!!!
It's kinda genius if you think about it. The main complaints before episode 4 was that Kenny was painted to be better than Luke so the end choice will be completely one sided. And there was rabid fan wars on here about who was obviously better. Then episode 4 rolls around with the image of Luke and Kenny back to back, highlighting the choice we all thought was coming. Then during that episode, we had the commentary on Life basically from Luke, with his passing next episode. He was the red herring, laid out so inconspicuously.
People who were dedicated Kenny lovers shot him, people who loved Jane let her die, and people who never wanted Clem alone chose that ending. Our Clementine is truly something unique based on how you want her to be. It still kinda blows my mind.
Luke was that guy who says things that are true but dint want to be heard. Through the the season he was doing that, right from 201 when he fought for our release from the shed, despite the others not wanting to risk it. 202, he discovers Matthew was Walters friend, even though that wasn't something that wanted to be heard. 203, he questioned Kenny and his ability to move after getting beat. A deposit 204, an episode before he died, he laid out the last inconvenient truths for Clem.
He was a good guy.
Guess Luke was like our little guardian angel huh?:3 And then when he dies we get no more guidance from him... Damn this makes me miss him more for some reason ;/
Luke you are the best. And always will be.
;-; luke come back!
This is all lexis fault!
THAT FUCKING BITCH , FUCK HER ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I MISS LUKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HE'S PROBABLY ALIVE.
A Little cold. PUN. THAZ A PUN!1!!1!1!!
Luke for Season 3? Hmmmm
HE'S ALIVE!
FUCK YOU LEXI!
I was going to say the same thing but it looks like you beat me to it XD Well said though
Luke was Clementine's compass? He was well-meaning, but his actions could be as questionable as the rest of the group at times.
Yeah, it took me a while to realize that. Not that he was a good guy, but you know what I mean.
I agree.
Agreed. I mean, I would have chosen Luke but it would have hit me harder than it did for me to lose Jane.
It would be harder since Kenny's been there since the beginning but Luke has a better head on his shoulders. They represented two very different things for Clementine. They were good people at heart, yes, but had very different ideas on how to live and cope. For Luke, it was all about not succumbing to the evils of the world, even as tempting as it may be. For Kenny, he has good intentions but can do cold things in order to ensure survival for himself and his family only. They both genuinely cared for Clementine, and Luke's been there since the beginning of season two.
I still think Luke was the deuteragonist.
One could also say that he is lukewarm now.
I always found myself convinced that Kenny, whilst being extremely cold with his options, was more reliable than Luke.
The number of times Luke f'd up made me feel as though I was *his * guardian. He wasn't necessarily stupid, but had a mix of bad luck and difficult decisions that wound up being the wrong (e.g.: Getting shot in the leg, trying to save the group on no sleep, sleeping with Jane and getting distracted.
Kenny, however, I found myself relying more on. I just sorely wish that Telltale was more generous with the options they gave us throughout Episode 5 to vocalize MY Clementine's feelings; predominantly that Kenny was turning into Carver.
Kenny = Cold and cut-throat, but reliable
Luke = Warm and friendly, but more unreliable
Yeah, I didn't like Jane, and the ending didn't have much of an emotional impact on me. I mean, I was reeling from Luke's death and then this all happened and the only person who mattered after Luke was gone was Kenny and AJ. I didn't have an emotional attachment to Jane so I wasn't going to shoot Kenny. HELL NAW
I agree, it was hard to have to make that choice when I thought about it. Thinking season 2 would end with that Kenny v. Luke decision. They were both very important to Clem.
I think Luke was really fleshed out in EP. 5, he had so much development and time to get to know him and only love him more, but so did Kenny.... GAWD I just still want Luke back...
