I'm not generalizing all Americans, but it's true lookng at a lot of comments on this thread.
Instead of berating people for not knowing something, enlighten them with your knowledge so that they do know. It's a win-win situation: you get the opportunity to teach someone something, and the other person gets to learn something new without being belittled for not knowing it in the first place. What you may see as common knowledge, someone else may not because everyone has had a different upbringing and education, and that's okay.

For example: My cousin lives in America, I know he doesn't think that way, even though a lot of the Americans (again, not everyone) act like it's a big deal when someone shows a lack of knowledge about things like the American Civil War.

I'm confused, are you still refering to the American Civil War? I'm not sure how that's one of the most deadly, what with it being based in … moreN.America, rather than across continents, like the world wars or Crusades, etc. I'd call them more deadly in terms of scope and lives lost, personally.

It's true, but not for all Americans, just some of them.
This wasn't a general statement to all Americans, I said it based on some people on this thread.
