What if there was a "what-if?" mini-season or DLC episode?

edited September 2014 in The Walking Dead

I've been thinking lately about what if TellTale released a DLC episode or mini-season detailing an alternate plot in the game if certain things had happened differently . Other game series including Assassin's Creed, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and Corpse Party have already done something similar. For instance, Ubisoft released an episodic DLC for Assassin's Creed 3, exploring what would have happened if Connor had never become an Assassin, and if George Washington had become corrupted by the Piece of Eden and became a tyrant. I have some different ideas for a story if TellTale decided to do this;

What if Carver had found Clementine after she left Lee?

What if Carver and Troy\Tavia had been the two shadows on the hill in episode 5, and Carver had taken Clementine back to Howe's and took her under his wing? It could explore the possibility would have happened if Clementine had a different role-model other than Christa and Omid since Caver has a vastly different view of the world than them. It would also give players the opportunity to find out more about Carver's back story, and why he is the way he is, in addition to what the Howe's Community was like in it's early days. Clementine could also meet the cabin group, and choose to side with them, or stay loyal to Carver. The 400 Days characters could show up as well later on in the DLC. The DLC could end with the Cabin Group's first escape from the camp, or alternatively, the Cabin Group and other angry community members staging a coup. Either of these endings could present the final, and most important choice [SHOOT CARVER] [SHOOT LUKE].

What if Lilly had shot Lee instead of Carley\Doug?

I must admit, I am not the first person to come up with this scenario. I was inspired by a fan fiction I read about this. What if when Lilly was going nuts outside the RV, Lee had sacrificed himself to protect someone, Lee would (depending on who was saved) throw either Carley, or Ben (since Doug dies trying to protect him) out of the path of the bullet.

The only problem I can see with this is it would be a challenge to have Carley or Doug as the playable character as TellTale would have to recorded multiple alternate audio clips depending on the choice of who you saved. Perhaps Kenny could be the playable character?

Other ideas that I didn't flesh out in my mind are what if the group had been recaptured when they attempted to escape Howe's? What if Carver survived IHW? What if Clem and Christa hadn't been separated?

What do you all think? Could you see Telltale doing something like this? And if they did, would you be interested? Also, what are your ideas for an what-if DLC?

  • Season 2 might have been a miserable experience, and episode 4 would probably would be a much bigger middle finger, I don't know...

  • I would like a secondary plot told with the DLCs, for exapmle, Nate's story from other survivors point of view.

  • I would love a DLC where the cabin group never met Clementine and we can see their true colors.

  • That would be interesting.

Lee through S2 :P Omid and Christa raising Clem for 16 months, what if Lee, Kenny, Ben, Christa and Omid reached the Stranger together, what if Lilly came back in Ep2 instead of Kenny, Doug or Carley through Eps 3 to 5 :P So many, Nick and Sarah reaching Ep5 ;3

  • Telltale wouldn't do something like this. It undermines the canon story and gives off a fanfiction-esque vibe that they probably want to avoid. It would also reduce the significance of character deaths since fans could always think that the character could just be brought back in a "what-if" scenario. Then there's the risk that fans will like the "what-if" scenario more than what actually happened and call for a continuation of the what-if scenario over the original storyline. Yeah, it's not happening.

  • I like the idea. Would be interesting to see what would happen if Clem didn't meet Kenny for example.

  • It's non-canon so anything that happens won't matter. Also even if some fans like it better then the original story, Telltale would never just decide to swap the non-canon and canon storylines.

  • Telltales should make a DLC about what Kenny was doing before he saw Clem in Season 2 and one about Jane and her sister as well

  • What if clem was bitten and lee not.. to see lee kill clem..

  • Strong story driven games have done it. It doesn't ruin the game itself

  • Have they? The only one that springs to mind is The Darkspawn Chronicles DLC for Dragon Age Origins and that was just an excuse to play as the evil monster side. I don't know, to me, these things either come off as completely pointless (akin to playing a dream sequence that you know to be a dream sequence) or as a valid, alternate reality, which goes against the realistic, "These are the things that happen. Deal with it." tone of the Walking Dead game.

  • Do you know what I think would be good, based on your season 2 choices if you are able to control other characters in the story, so basically the parts where Clem is not around or leading up to meeting her in key parts of the story.

  • What's the name of the fanfiction you read? (where Lilly shoot Lee)

  • Isn't Undead Nightmare for RDR like that? It in no way affects the emotions and grittiness of the game. Gears did it, although that was a deleted scene, alternating how you get through a mission instead of being a true different idea. I'd prefer a good DLC that adds to the story canon wise, but if a what if idea were better made by Telltale, I'd prefer that. Like whatever they think is the best quality

  • I'd rather a DLC similar to 400 Days where you can see glimpses of other survivors' viewpoints, even if they are not all that significant to the main story. Maybe even a continuation of what happens to the 400 Days characters themselves after Howes, although that would be highly determinant on who went with Tavia in the first place.

  • Yeah :3 Good ep though

  • I think it would be cool if they did a DLC where it showed the 9 days of Clementine & Kenny/Jane/Or by herself before they reached wellington.howes or the herd. I think it would be pretty interesting, and every story would be different. I know it sounds a little hard for telltale to do, but after all, It's only a DLC, and wouldn't last very long anyway. I wonder if they could pull that off ;p As I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen with season 3 aha :D

  • Not a what if idea but how about Russel's old friend Steve coming after him for taking supplies, thus involving the 400 Days group, before they get to Carver Camp. The finale could be Carver rescuing them and showing them trusting him, this Carver would be different to the guy in S2, more methodical like Ep2 Carver, less violent brute like Ep3 Carver. The encounter with Steve could be what drives him to change. This can be changed by exchanging Steve with Nate, a very popular character, but I thought Steve would be interesting as he sounds just as if not more insane than Nate, and his 7 person rule sounds like a personality that could be very fresh to TWDG. Basically, this would be Steve/Nate versus Carver and we'd play as a 400 Days character or new character. Or an alternate idea, an encounter between Steve and Nate, for some interesting psycho versus psycho action, kind of new to TWDG. We'd get more Ep2 Carver whom many of us thought was amazing, reasoning for him changing, more 400 Days cast
