I'd say they're about the same in terms of violence, but "brutal" I think can have multiple meanings in this case beyond just the physical nature of the deaths.
I'd say season 2 was more "brutal" because of the underlying message that sometimes it's the right call to let somebody die brutally, even an innocent young kid. Plus, it constantly tried to make everybody except Telltale's favorite characters into people you just couldn't trust in the end on top of making others just seem useless, while season 1 had characters that were right there with you to the end. Season 1 could be just as brutal as season 2 in terms of violence, but its underlying message was always that while morality could be compromised in extreme situations, letting someone die when they don't truly deserve it is always morally incorrect.
There was also the added bonus of season 2 having a young child as the protagonist seeing all these horrible things up close and personal, whereas Lee being an adult and Clementine being so adorable usually helped temper the horrific things we saw.
Similar levels I guess.
Definitely season 2.
My face
I think Season 2 was far more brutal.
Someone say Saltlick? And Damn I really liked Pete, He deserved better...
I say it was a mix, Season One had the Saltlick while Season Two had Kenny's crowbar beatdown.
The Crowbar Beatdown Yeah I think season 2 takes the cake with this scene. The Saltlick was pretty gruesome though.
Violence-wise, I'd say Season 1 barely won. In Season 1 there was Sandra's face after Lee killed her. There was Larry's head being smashed in. There was Mark with no legs and there was Andy getting electrocuted (Player's choice).
In Season 2 there was Kenny's eye, chopping off Sarita's arm, Carlos's fingers being broken, and Kenny beating up Arvo.
Oh, and Carver's death
Season 1
In Season 1... there was a lot of emotion between Clementine and Lee that made Season 1 very emotional, but there were a lot of happy moments between all of the characters.
Season 2......
I think that season 2 was a little more brutal because the story line was a bit dark... and it was a sad story line, but like there were happy moments in there like when you see Kenny again.
Sarah's death wasn't really that brutal to players since we didn't see what happened.
It's pretty close, but I say that between Sam the Dog, the self-stitching, Carver's death, and the determinantly potential brutality of Sarita's death that S2 wins by a crowbar-pulverized nose.with a hatchet through it.
That's so gross....
Season 2 takes this by a landslide IMO.
We see guts being pulled out of her in the event that she died in the trailer.
I agree with Damyklan. In addition to Season 2 being "edgier" with the violence, we also have to remember that the horrors become much more effective when you realize that a child is suffering through all of this. You're vulnerable, you're reliant on adults who let you down and fail to protect you, messed-up people are actively trying to corrupt you into a callous monster, and the most kind and compassionate people continue to die while leaving the worse behind.
Pete? Surprised you didn't saltlick him the moment he got bit.
S1: Had the Saltlick Session and Brie's death, not to mention Lee's amputation and Ep2 Cannibal theme.
S2: Had the Carver beat down and the Stitching Session.
I'm actually going to say S1 was more violent in terms of actually gore on the screen. But S2 was more brutal in terms of its tone, and story.
One word. Stitching.
Hell No, Not many people realize Pete was a prophet among the Saltlicks because he foreshadowed the coming of the savior (Kenny) and he used Saltlicks many times in his life
Okay...
Not sure about the Saltlicks in his life, BUT...
I can see that his subtitle colours did indeed foreshadow their future usage.
This is basically Telltale to us lol
Season 2 is a bloodbath, pretty much focusing on the action and less character development.
Season 1 is a masterpiece, it was depressing but not as brutal as the second season. Not as much action but great character development and story, something Season 2 was lacking.
He gets annihilated, I was in awe the entire scene I felt like i was in a movie. Hahah it was a great scene.
Hahaha those parts were oh so gory, Sarita's beautiful face just axed! I couldn't believe they made Clem able to do that! I was just freaking out with what I had done.
as far as the zombies go then it would be the first series, example of this is some of the characters death are sudden, they jump out at you and take you of guard, and then dealing with them is quite brutal, also the characters who die from the zombies are quick and sudden. e.g.: Lee gets bitten, Lee taking out Clementine's babysitter after she had turn, recuing Clementine from the zombie in the bathroom at the Eventt's store (blurred vision you had react quickly).
But as series 2 goes then the humans are the most brutal and the main focus of the series. the things they do to each out e.g.: Caver takes control of the ski lodge and take people as hostage, Carver brutal attack of Redgie, Carver's death by Kenny's hand, Kenny snap and attacks Arvo, Kenny and Jane's fight.
Both series have they burtal moments but each series focus on different elements.
Lol "great story". This is coming from the developer that thinks that a guy surviving getting eaten alive is "realistic" while dismissing the idea of a woman surviving a hold-up as "unrealistic".
I think Season 2 was much more brutal. Not only because it was gorier (Season 1 was pretty gory. St. John's anyone? Lol.), but because everything was so much more dire and hopeless. From the get-go things are very dark. The opening of Season 2 takes any hopes we had for Clementine finding happiness with Christa and Omid and immediately shatters them. They're so happy and at ease, then boom, Omid is senselessly and needlessly shot to death and then we flash forward to find that Christa lost her baby, the only potential new life since the game began. Christa and Clem seem just so worn, they're cold and hungry, they have no provisions or shelter and are immediately accosted by bandits and separated, possibly permanently.
Then, Clem is on her own, almost murdered, almost drowned, and then almost killed by a sweet family dog that turned feral from the harshness of post-apocalyptic life. In my opinion, Sam and Clementine have both gone through the same transformation. They both had loving families and were left all alone to fend for themselves and it's turned them both into much more dangerous creatures, who have forgotten about how good life used to be. After having to kill this poor dog, who attacked only for survival, Clem encounters a group who views a 11 year old girl as a dangerous enemy and she has to resort to stealing medicine and stitching her own arm up in order to save her life. That's a clear sign that things have become MUCH worse since Season 1, when people still had some semblance of trust in their fellow man.
After that, the group is shanghai'd by an evil despot who forces them into slave labor and kills people mercilessly. Then, Clem witnesses the shattering of one of her only friends, Sarah, a sweet, but fragile girl who just gives up on life at only 15 years of age. Luke, another of Clementine's closest friends, dies a completely random and senseless death that there's no hope of saving him from. Clem, Jane, and Kenny are betrayed by Mike and Bonny, two people she trusted. She's shot in the process. Finally, she has to choose between the only two people left her life, both of whom she cares deeply for.
With all those events added up and being experienced by a small child, I'd say Season 2 is a whirlwind of heaviness and brutality. It's far more brutal than Season 1, in my opinion, especially because these things are happening to a kid not a grown man who had already experienced darkness prior to the ZA when he murdered his wife's lover. There is practically no sense of hopefulness amongst any of the survivors. They're beaten and tired the entire way through. There is backstabbing and distrust throughout the entirety. While Season 1 had some of these elements, Lee brought a sense of hope for the future. He maintained a positive outlook and kept his cool right to the end. When Lee died, I feel all hope died with him. While Season 1 will always be my favorite, Season 2 brought a sense of grittiness and I felt that even though not all of the events that transpired were realistic, the emotions and themes conveyed were. Telltale does an excellent job of getting us emotionally invested in this story and makes these characters and their pain seem real. Season 1 is my favorite because it's where it all started, it has Lee, and it was just 100% perfect in my mind. Season 2 turned Clementine into a flesh-and-blood character and did an excellent job of doing the impossible and creating a protagonist that was just as great as Lee.
TL;DR: Season 2 is much more brutal because things are much more hopeless for everyone and all these horrible things aren't happening to an adult who's equipped to deal with it and fully capable (Lee) as in Season 1, but to a young child who is having to grow up and develop under such extreme circumstances.
Great post. I hadn't considered the shift in tone in that much detail.
I personally enjoyed the more vivid color palette and the constant juxtaposition of beautiful surroundings against the hideous cruelty of people. The first Season, like most generic apocalyptic fare, used washed-out colors and darkness as shorthand for an oppressive atmosphere. Season 2's darkness feels all the stronger because of its colorfulness.
I hope Season 3 continues this trend by being even more visually vivid.
I'd say season 2.
Badass season 2.
