After killing some folks and taking their stuff, he discovered an interdimensional por… moretal, which transported him to the world of Thedas. There, he killed a man who looked just like him, taking his possessions, and, most importantly, his name. He now goes by the alias "Nathaniel Howe", an alleged son of late Arl Rendon Howe, and by now a Grey Warden.
...Or an amnesiac with some mental issues. He heard Nathaniel's tale and, after killing him, started to think it was him all along, especially since their names coincide.
