Gavin Hammon on mental disabilities within TWD

edited October 2014 in The Walking Dead

I hate to beat a dead horse and resurrect this old topic but it seems our lord and saviour is in agreement with me on the topic of Sarah not having a disability...

I didn't send this ask.fm question, by the way... Whoever it was seems a tad overly sensitive, lol.

Now obviously Gavin's word isn't law despite what some believe, but I believe his argument holds ground. Why are people so inclined to believe she among other characters suffer from mental disabilities? It just seems like people are obsessed with having every ethnic background, religion, sexuality, and illness represented within the game and it's frankly tiring for me as someone who's both bi and mildly dyspraxic. It's irritating, and I'm glad there's been at least some vague confirmation on the subject.

Figured I'd create this thread to stir some form of discussion that with luck won't transform into an uncontrollable flame-war.... Had to get this out of my system seeing as I found myself pissed off by everyone claiming Sarah was disabled during the Amid the Ruins forum era shitstorm.

  • Always felt that Sarah was just an over-sheltered timid teenager, never got the impression of any disability. When we first met her she was reading a book about trans-dimensional body snatchers, giving the proper medical equipment to Clem, and was overall just happy to talk to another girl around her age. This poor girl deserved better, but she was definitely not meant to survive in TWD universe. Always hope that there will be even more colorful characters in season 3 and that they can stay alive till the end.

  • Exactly! I love her as a character and I'm not sure why people felt the need to label her with autism. I'm pretty sure anyone would act as she did having been sheltered for years.

  • Here in murka people see a lot of little details and diagnose them as disorders/disabilities. Class is boring as fuck and you would rather draw than pay attention? You have ADHD. Find people incredibly boring and would rather destroy some nerds in Quake 3? You are a sociopath. Etc. We live in a retarded society.

All the tumblr kids overreacting after ep4 was some of the best drama I've ever partaked in.

I have to agree with that, all that hate over something so stupid was really just funny to look at.

I think the vast majority of crazed Tumblr children actually left the forum after they realized most people no longer cared about their ridiculously PC opinions. Haven't seen any lately, thankfully.
