Characters being determinantly loyal to/mad at you in S3

edited October 2014 in The Walking Dead

This is something I wished we had seen more of in S2. Here's an example; if you help Kenny put down Larry, he will remain loyal and friendly towards Lee, and he will also help Lee with Danny, while Lilly will not help Lee against Danny or Andy, and be snippy towards him for the rest of her appearance in the game. However, if you helped Lilly attempt to save Larry, she will help with both Danny, and Andy, and will be polite to Lee through the rest of her appearance, while Kenny will become angry, not help with Danny, and make sarcastic comments through the game. The case applies to Ben as well, if you supported Ben throughout the game, he will willingly go with you to save Clem, but if you were not supportive of him, he will decline if given the choice. Chirsta, Omid, and Kenny are the same with the option of helping Lee.

I didn't seen much of this in S2, with the small exception of Sarah. If you pinky swore with Sarah in ATR, you can teach her how to hold a gun, she will say hi to Clem in the trailer park, and won't deny that her and Clem are friends. However, if you did not pinky swear with her in ATR, you cannot teach her how to use a gun, she will not greet Clem in the trailer park, and will say that her and Clem are not friends.

EDIT: This also happens with Bonnie depending on if you go to Luke or not.

I personally think this gives players the feeling that their choices matter more, and adds to the game play. I have to admit, while I was a little annoyed that you can never be given the option to make amends with Kenny before he forgives you in NTL, I also really like this game play addition, and would like to see it in S3.

What do you all think? Did you hate this part of the game? Or would you like to see more of it?

Comments

  • Anyone want to see this in S3?

  • I wanted this with more radical changes in how people treat you. If you treat someone like shit, they should eventually hate you.

  • I agree. We haven't really seen this yet.

  • I wanted this with so many characters, mainly Kenny and Arvo. That was one of the best parts of S1, it was worth replaying in my eyes just to see how the characters react differently to Lee depending on who he takes sides with. There was hardly any of this in S2, which was part of why the choices seemed so useless. S1's choices didn't really matter in the end either, but it was the character's varying reactions to the player that made it conceal that fact and make everything feel worthwhile.

  • Yet another mistake of S2. The characters don't care what Clementine says 5 minutes after she says it. Take for instance the first episode where Clem has the opportunity to audaciously low blow Rebecca with the blackmailing about who's the child actually is. Does it matter? Of course not. It's nearly instantaneously forgotten and the next day / from then on Rebecca has nothing but building love and respect for the person who threatened her with a (possibly) relationship ending blackmail. A very short time later asking this person's ideas for baby names. What?!

This is repeated countless times through the season. Personally I blame this on Clementine being the playable character coupled with the writers inabilities to coherently produce a plot without having to reset the NPC views of the PC starting each and every scene.

  • Im just holding out for a corpse of Kenny and Jane within 5 minutes.

But yes choice needs to come back or really just start to work

  • I agree.

This is part of what made your choices felt like it mattered back in Season 1, the characters reaction and long-term memories of what choices you've made. Remember Kenny continuous reminded of how Lee chose to save Shawn over Duck? Rebecca certainly doesn't even remember Clementine blackmailing her at one time.

Season 2 got rid of this idea, which ended up making your choices irrelevant in the end, and when it does it matters little anyway since the character ends up dead moments later or leaves the group immediately.

  • Yeah I agree, it was stupid how I could be such an ass to Kenny but in the end if i ask him for his help hes all cool

  • Maybe because Clem is a little girl?I dont know.If you dont side with kenny at the meatlocker,at the start of episode 3 he doesnt help you when walkers get in the room. Now,if Clem doesnt side with Kenny, would he let a little girl die?I agree with you tho.

  • I don't necessarily know about leaving her to die, what I'm thinking more is making rude and snippy comments towards her throughout the game.

  • One of the things I notices back in Season 1. It is a little thing but it is just as meaningful.

If you supported Kenny in episode 2, at the beginning of episode 3 while you two are out looking for supplies, he smiles, like he trusts Lee and has his back. If you supported Lilly in the previous episode, Kenny will have a rather distrustful facial expression when he looks at you.

It was subtle, but very strong. I hope they will do that in Season 3. You don't have to show and tell the character's relationship with each other through words. Facial expressions shows it just as strongly, if not more so.

  • I have to agree with Tolispro, I think that they didn't do that in Season 2 as much was because Clementine was a little girl. With Lee it's understandable because he is a grown man, but because Clementine is a little girl, I think the people, like Kenny, are willing to let it slide more. But if Clem were to be older or an adult in Season 3, I definitely see that playing a role again, especially if she becomes a leader of her own group.

We need an adult, preferably female protagonist who's significantly different to Lee. She'll meet Clem and become her next guardian, the overarching theme being the repair of all the emotional damage Clem's been subject to. The eventual group would be trying to build a functioning society now that the walker threat's died down immensely, and sub-plots along the way could include rivalry with another group, tracking down Christa, looking after AJ perhaps, (Provided he isn't passed on to someone else) etc etc.

But I'm no professional writer. Maybe it could all circle around the concept of building a decent life within Wellington, lots of scavenging and searching for other groups to bring in... Hell, maybe we could play as the leader of Wellington? Now I'm just rambling. I just hope we don't get something as depressing as Season 2, with fucktons of people dying one by one, because that's getting predictable.

Giving the protagonist tons of responsibility means people are gonna get pissed regardless of what their decisions are... There's a lot of opportunity for characters having differing opinions depending on choices there, and we won't wouldn't have the problem S2 had where no one really cared.

  • That would be a nice, 'little' touch. Mass Effect style charisma.

And there's the problem. 'Little'='Gigantic amount of writing time, animation and VA'.

It's just too much work for a release every 2 months.

But it would definitley be awesome, if handled right.

  • S1 was able to do it within two months or less.
